About the Role

CHS WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM - Student Support Worker


New Directions is a non-profit social service agency offering a wide range of resources and services that provide supports in a variety of settings and foster people’s hopes and dreams in their communities. The organization’s mission is to provide responsive and individualized services that foster the hopes and dreams of people and their communities. Throughout the organization, staff and leadership work in many fields and in variety of shifts to deliver quality service and supports. 

 

The Work Experience Program with Child Home Services (CHS) is an initiative designed to provide youth with meaningful opportunities to build practical skills, gain hands-on experience, and prepare for future employment.  Through this program, participating youth will have the chance to develop workplace readiness, build confidence, and engage in structured work placements while being supported by their care teams.

  

Qualifications and Requirements for the Role:

  • A youth in care that is currently with New Directions or who has recently aged out of care.
  • Individuals who are open to various trainings New Directions offer before they begin the employment.
  • A Valid Class 5 Driver’s License would be considered an asset
  • Available to work a variety of shifts on weekdays, weekends and holidays
  • Able to provide three (3) references, preferably from direct supervisors
  • Comfortable assisting with personal hygiene routines and activities of daily living
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge, awareness and sensitivity to diverse cultures and traditions
  • Current First Aid/CPR is considered an asset
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training is considered an asset
  • Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) is considered an asset
  • An understanding of people who are marginalized

 

The salary for all student positions is $16.00 per hour.  There are no minimum hours guaranteed for this position.

 

The successful candidate will be subject to Criminal Record, Child/Adult Abuse Registry, and Prior Contact checks. In addition, applicants will be required to provide a copy of their Driver’s License and a current Driver’s Abstract.
