This position is a summer contract until the end of August. Scheduled shifts on weekdays and weekends on a 40-hour work week. The hourly wage range for this position is $18.20 to $21.41.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the Parks Summer Student will work in a team and an individual setting to maintain outdoor recreational spaces, perform inspections, assist with park maintenance duties, and provide excellent customer service. This role will operate equipment such as mowers, trimmers, hand blowers, trail blowers, groomers, pickup trucks, and hand tools.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work both individually and as part of a team to maintain outdoor recreational spaces and assist in providing quality recreational opportunities for users.
  • Perform playground inspections and general maintenance or restoration.
  • Engage in a variety of park maintenance duties such as: garbage collection and pickup, graffiti removal, sign installation and repair, restroom and facility cleaning, beach maintenance, grass cutting and trimming, vegetation removal, trail repairs and cleaning, and painting.
  • Sports field upkeep, restoration, and maintenance duties such as: grooming baseball diamonds, setting up base, line painting, watering and irrigation, flooding maintenance and repairs, grass cutting and trimming, soccer net installation and maintenance, and disc golf course maintenance.
  • Interact with sports league convenors and coaches regarding park rules, regulations, and user expectations.
  • Provide customer service to the public in a kind and respectful manner.
  • Operate equipment such as: mowers, trimmers, hand blowers, trail blowers, groomers, pickup trucks, and hand tools.
  • Maintenance of trails requires active walking/hiking of new or existing trail areas, clearing/cutting bush/brush/trees, building and/or repairing trails, structures, and installing signs.
  • Perform other general municipal maintenance duties as assigned in accordance with departmental and corporate objectives.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a secondary or post-secondary educational institution.
  • Currently between the ages of 15 – 30.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Certification in First Aid/CPR & WHMIS is an asset.
  • G or G2 class Driver’s License in good standing is required.

Effort/Physical Demands

  • Physical demand requires standing, sitting, lifting, crouching, and walking.
  • Visual attention for health and safety compliance and personal safety while on the job.

Working Conditions

  • CSA approved safety boots must be purchased by students and worn at all times.
  • Staff shirts will be supplied by the Town and must be worn at all times.
  • Work in extreme outside conditions (heat/cold).
  • May be required to work occasional weekends, evenings, and special events.
