Role Overview

The Application Engineering Intern supports the Outage Technologies and Processes (OTP) team in coordinating, tracking, and documenting engineering activities related to generator outage planning and execution. This role provides hands‑on experience assisting with Generator Bulletins (GBs), Engineering Service Requests (ESRs), parts tracking, and data analysis, while contributing to cross‑functional collaboration and business process execution.

 

The internship also offers exposure to design and engineering tools, including computer‑aided drafting (CAD), reverse engineering techniques, and 3D printing technologies used in outage tooling and specialty design. This position is ideal for students seeking practical experience in power generation engineering, outage support, and applied design in a project‑driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Under the guidance of Application Engineers and Managers, the intern will:
  • Assist in creating, organizing, and maintaining engineering and financial documentation within Engineering folders.
  • Support tracking of Generator Bulletins (GBs) in coordination with Project Managers (PMs), OTP Generator Service Engineering (GSE), and site teams.
  • Help update and maintain GB-related data and documentation in Windchill.
  • Develop and maintain Excel-based trackers for:
  • Time spent on tasks by job and activity
  • GB status and milestones
  • Generator parts orders and disposition
  • Assist in compiling data to support the development of basic task-based metrics and algorithms.
  • Support collaboration with internal teams (OTP GSE, Long-Term Service Agreement Program Managers, Operations) and external partners (MELCO/MEPPI, Mitsubishi Generator).
  • Assist with development of outage- and unit-specific work scopes and preliminary parts lists.
  • Track generator parts quotes and orders, including third-party vendor follow-ups under supervision.
  • Support development and maintenance of generator parts Bills of Material (BOMs).
  • Assist with documentation and disposition tracking of Engineering Service Requests (ESRs) related to generator parts and GBs.
  • Perform 3D scanner setup and scanning with blue/white light scanners.
  • Process and optimize 3D scan data to be ready for analysis.
  • Occasionally support field requests for 3D models and CAD drawings of specialty tooling.
  • Oversee maintenance and restock of materials for FFF, SLS, and SLA 3D printers.
  • Independently 3D print and post process fixtures/job aids/tooling/etc. using various 3D printing technologies.
  • Perform additional assignments and project support tasks as required.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering, Engineering Technology, Project Management, or a related technical discipline.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel (basic formulas, tables, and charts), Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Exposure to technical and business systems such as CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks), engineering document control systems (e.g., Windchill), ERP platforms (e.g., SAP), or project management tools (preferred but not required).
  • Strong communication, organizational, and critical‑thinking skills, with the ability to support multiple tasks in a team environment.
