The Transportation and Waste Management department of the Infrastructure Services division has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of Student Engineering Technician - Transportation and Waste Management. Reporting to the Supervisor, Roads, Drainage and Flood Protection, this position offers 36 hours bi-weekly starting as soon as possible until August 14, 2026.
The Student Engineering Technician’s main responsibilities will be to support the Transportation and Waste Management team with waste reduction, organics division, public education, and outreach initiatives. This position provides operational and administrative support for waste room assessments, business engagement, litter reduction, educational material development, operational logistics, and other programs. This position will work closely with and be mentored by the Zero Waste Coordinator and Waste Operations Coordinator.
Qualified candidates have completed Grade 11 or Grade 12 or are currently enrolled full-time in a post-secondary diploma or degree program and are returning to school in September 2026. Course work or demonstrated interest in environmental studies, sustainability, waste management, communications, geography, business administration or public policy are required. Qualified candidates will have experience with customer service, administration, communications or community outreach, Microsoft Office Suite, social media content creation, or basic graphic design tools. Experience conducting surveys, field observations, data entry and knowledge of local government are considered an asset. Candidates must be physically able to do outdoor work and travel by bike in all outdoor weather conditions.
The successful candidate is a professional and solution-focused team player with a high attention to detail and the ability to prioritize work while engaging with the public and business operators. The successful candidate also demonstrates commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace while contributing to a positive team environment. The starting wage for this role is: high school students earn 75% of $34.87 and post-secondary students earn 88% of $34.87 per hour. In addition to the hourly wage, casual employees at the RMOW receive 12% of their regular earnings in lieu of employee benefits.
