About the Role

This is an unpaid fellowship through the Department of War (DoW) SkillBridge Program. The fellow selected for this role will not receive compensation or benefits from GDIT and will not be an employee, agent or contractor of GDIT but rather will remain an employee of the DoW and will receive compensation and benefits through the DoW.

Job Description:

Through the Department of War (DoW) SkillBridge Program, GDIT offers transitioning service members the opportunity to gain hands‑on training and professional experience as an IAMD Tactical Action Officer (TAO) Training Fellow, supporting Aegis Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) Advanced Warfare Training and Navy tactical combat operations in a high‑fidelity training environment.

In this Fellowship, the participant will gain exposure to ship‑embedded training systems, shore‑based distributed training systems, tactical scenario development, instructor‑led TAO training, and advanced warfare command roles. The Fellow will train alongside experienced warfare instructors to develop foundational expertise in Aegis IAMD operations, combat systems tactical employment, curriculum development, formal course review processes, and dynamic assessment of watch stander performance during integrated scenarios.

The IAMD Tactical Action Officer (TAO) Training Fellow will learn how advanced tactical training is developed, delivered, and evaluated while contributing to curriculum updates, scenario execution, combat system configuration alignment, documentation review, and instructor support activities across SCSTC San Diego’s high‑demand training mission.

HOW AN IAMD TACTICAL ACTION OFFICER (TAO) TRAINING FELLOW WILL MAKE AN IMPACT:

  • Participate in instruction supporting Aegis IAMD Advanced Warfare Training for Tactical Action Officers.

  • Support scenario‑based training using ship‑embedded and shore‑based distributed training systems.

  • Observe and assist in dynamic assessment of watch standers during complex integrated warfare scenarios.

  • Contribute to reviewing, updating, and tailoring curriculum lesson plans, instructor guides, and training materials.

  • Support Formal Course Reviews, identify training gaps, and provide recommended updates under instructor supervision.

  • Assist in developing, testing, maintaining, and delivering Navy Combat Systems training programs aligned with SCSTC standards.

  • Help establish and review course content, learning objectives, and criteria for evaluating instructional effectiveness.

  • Participate in instructor‑led sessions, tracking trainee progress and maintaining training documentation.

  • Maintain situational awareness of emerging Navy IAMD technology, tactical procedures, and system updates.

  • Support Warfare Commander roles in supervised lab and scenario environments.

  • Assist with NETC‑aligned instructor qualification requirements and evaluation processes.

  • Provide instructional support to the Site Lead/Manager as assigned.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical discipline, OR equivalent combination of military experience, technical training, and formal certifications.

Experience:

  • 8+ years of experience in combat systems tactical employment, including management of combat systems personnel, planning and execution of Surface, Air, and Subsurface warfare mission areas, and C2 of shipboard combat operations.

  • Minimum of 1 year as an Instructor/Trainer/Evaluator in a Navy Training Environment, including curriculum maintenance, developing learning objectives, building test items, evaluating instructional materials, and counseling students.

  • Experience as a qualified TAO or Master/Afloat Training Specialist is highly desired.

Technical & Professional Skills:

  • Knowledge of Aegis IAMD operations, tactical doctrine, and Baseline 9C capabilities.

  • Familiarity with distributed training, tactical scenario execution, and combat systems readiness assessment.

  • Ability to provide clear, concise communication in high‑tempo training environments.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods while supporting instruction.

Role Requirements:

  • Active Secret clearance.

  • U.S. Citizenship required.

  • On‑site attendance at customer site in San Diego, CA.

  • Fellowship duration aligned with DoW SkillBridge requirements.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

DoW SkillBridge Eligibility:

  • Has served at least 180 days on active duty

  • Can participate within the last 6 months of separation or retirement

  • Will receive an honorable discharge

  • Has taken any service TAP/TGPS

  • Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months

Received Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DoW SkillBridge Program prior to start of the fellowship.
