About the Behavioral Health Internship – Youth Mental Health Peer Outreach Intern
Youth Mental Health Peer Outreach Intern will learn from the Supervisor of Youth Psychotherapy (Preceptor) located at Max Robinson Center 1201 Sycamore Drive SE, Washington, DC 20032 and 1525 14th Street NW and during their time, will learn how to provide outreach and education in the community through peer-to-peer trainings, community collaborations, administrative management of scheduling, events focused on youth mental health, and learn/practice on providing referrals to the Youth Mental Health program. Key learning objectives:
- Professional Development:
- Youth Mental Health First Aid to support the facilitation of peer-to-peer training in the community and on-site at WWH.
- Utilizes supervision to grow skills in youth mental health first aid and ability to refer individuals in the community effectively.
- Attends weekly supervision with the Supervisor of Youth Psychotherapy.
- Objectives to achieve and be able to or enhance:
- How to provide on-site advocacy and outreach in schools and at community events for WWH’s Youth Mental Health program.
- Ability to connect to neighborhood schools and organizations for partnership and seek out areas of need in the community.
- Ability to engage in community collaborations and events to network and recruit for training and events.
- Ability to organize and execute two peer-to-peer trainings on Youth Mental Health First Aid and an annual Self Care Fair
- Increase the method of supporting grant reports by collecting demographic data and tracking attendance at training.
- How to develop and organize a system for referrals from community events into therapy programs.
- How to work with supervisor to identify areas for skill and competency building around work with LGBTQ+ individuals, individuals living with HIV, and youth impacted by trauma.
Students who meet the eligibility requirements listed below may apply.
Eligibility:
- Students must be members of an institution with a work-study agreement with Whitman-Walker.
- Must meet the institution criteria to be eligible to participate.
- Must be able to attend a half-day orientation and complete required additional in-person training, surveys via ADP, and compliance training through Healthicity.
- Must comply with all regulations of the internship and policies of Whitman-Walker, and the affiliated Institution.
Application process:
To apply, students must upload a resume and cover letter. If selected, students must submit a letter of agreement from the affiliated institution, as well as a student identification card. Students will be selected on a rolling basis and based on availability.
