A New Leaf has a social enterprise that operates 5 greenhouses, 2 Retail Garden Centers, a 3 acre farm, and a wholesale flower business. Our social enterprise is designed to support our mission to create independence for individuals with developmental disabilities and autism. A New Leaf, Inc. provides individuals with developmental disabilities marketable job training in a horticulture environment, conducts community employment placement, and offers residential services, including housing, to increase independence and individual choices. Founded in 1979, A New Leaf, Inc. provides programming in a greenhouse environment serving as a vocational training center for adults with developmental disabilities. A New Leaf, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization funded by sales to the public, Tulsa Area United Way and private contributions. About the Role

Description

 

Reports To: Horticulture Supervisor and WBL Coordinator    Job Status: Non- Exempt     

DAYS/HOURS OF JOB:  Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and or Sunday        (Quarter 1 and Quarter 2)      

               * Shift time before 9:00am after 4:30pm- discretion of WBL employer needs                                                                  

Shift 1:     9:00am- 1:00pm                                                                                                       Shift 2:     1:00pm-4:30pm                                                                                                        Duration: 4 weeks -12 weeks  

Job Summary:  

Assists with the growing process within the greenhouses. Provides customer service. Waters plants, extract weeds and prepare and distribute plant material. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:  

1.Conducts greenhouse duties that include, but are not limited to: watering, planting, grooming and general plant care. This may include but not limited to the following: 

  • Uses equipment such as wheelbarrows or carts to transport plant material throughout the greenhouse complex. 
  • Digs and rakes soil, plants, weeds, and waters plants, shrubs, and trees, using hand tools and gardening tools. 
  • Fills growing tanks with water. 
  • Folds and staples corrugated boxes used for horticultural products. 

2. Work flexible schedule based on schedules of persons served by and needs of A New Leaf, including but not limited to working scheduled weekends to water and spray plants. 

3. Follow policy & procedures of A New Leaf. 

4. Ensures all individuals served are safe in their working environment and program participation at all times. 

5. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, (complete requires documentation and reports required by A New Leaf) 

6. Assists greenhouse customers with questions and purchases. 

7. Completes all required documentation 

8. Attends all necessary licenses, completing them successfully, such as: pesticide-spraying technician testing, if applicable. 

9. Interacts with clients served to promote self esteem, confidence and morale. Participates actively to ensure the happiness and well-being of clients. Treats individuals with dignity & respect. 

10. Represents A New Leaf & individuals in the program in a positive manner; acts as a positive role model for all individuals served. 

11. Performs other duties as requested to meet the needs of A New Leaf. 

This position allows the student to practice the skills they learned in their pre-requisite/core and year 1 classes, exploring career opportunities that encompass horticulture practices and techniques and community demands in the occupational field of Greenhouse Structures and Horticulture.  

The student will complete an application and will interview with the manager of the assigned work-based learning site (Greenhouse Horticulture ).

Additional Requirements 

  • Maintain CPR/First Aid certification.? 
  • Criminal arrest check will be done through the OSBI; Per Section 1025.1 et seq. Of Title 56 of the Oklahoma statues, House Bill 1790, any prospective employee with a felony or misdemeanor conviction, guilty plea or plea of nolo contendere will not be eligible for employment.? This prohibition may be disregarded if an appropriate waiver is obtained from the Office of the Director, DDSD, Department of Human Services, or his/her designees.? 
  • Community Services Registry check (House Bill 1790) will be done through DDSD, Department of Human Services.? The person whose name appears on the registry cannot work for A New Leaf.? 
  • Employees and A New Leaf are engaged in an at-will employment relationship, meaning that either are free to terminate the relationship at any time with or without reason and with or without notice.?
