Apply your studies in economics, econometrics, public policy, finance or accounting to real world problems and get hands-on experience working for DTF or the Essential Services Commission (ESC).

Paid internships are offered on a full-time, fixed term basis across two streams - Economics & Public Policy and Accounting & Finance – with roles available in the following areas:

  • The Economic Division provides advice on economic, regulatory, social and revenue policy.

  • The Budget & Finance Division provides advice on resource allocationfiscal strategy, and financial sustainability.

  • The Infrastructure Division provides advice on infrastructure projects throughout all phases of development and implementation.

  • The ESC is Victoria's independent regulator that promotes the long-term interests of Victorian consumers with respect to the price, quality, and reliability of essential services.

About the role

As an intern at DTF or the ESC, you will be matched with a team in one of the above areas for 12 weeks between 30 November 2026 and 19 February 2027.

Economics & Public Policy interns will report to a Senior Economist or Senior Policy Analyst. Accounting & Finance interns will report to a Principal Analyst or Senior Analyst. See the Position Description for more details.

Throughout your internship at DTF or the ESC, you will:

  • Gain practical experience in applying your studies to help shape policies and decisions with real-world impacts,

  • Contribute to the meaningful work that DTF and the ESC do to improve the lives of all Victorians,

  • Learn how the Victorian Government functions and how key policies and decisions are made,

  • Work alongside leading experts in economics, public policy and financial management, with on-the-job support and mentoring from experienced public servants,

  • Develop your professional skills and expand your network through a tailored program of training and mentoring sessions, and

  • Have fun and learn with a cohort of like-minded interns that want to contribute to Victoria’s economic development.

If eligible, interns who successfully complete the internship program are strongly encouraged to apply for an ongoing role through the Victorian Government Graduate Program.

Insights from past interns

“My internship with DTF stood out for the opportunity to contribute to genuinely novel reforms, where I coordinated key departmental reporting and saw how even internlevel work can meaningfully shape highpriority outcomes.

The experience also broadened my understanding of economics beyond mathematics, as I developed and strengthened my policy analysis skillset in a complex, realworld setting. Just as significantly, I felt my team was deeply invested in my development, consistently offering thoughtful guidance that has had a lasting impact on how I approach my career.

I would strongly recommend the program, even to students who are hesitant about their interest in economics, but keen on public policy.”

Sophie, 2025-26 Economics and Public Policy Intern

“The DTF internship program was a rewarding experience. I was exposed to a range of tasks early on and given real responsibility, which made the work engaging and meaningful from the start.

The intern cohort was a highlight. We got along really well as a group, built strong connections and made friendships I'll keep well beyond the program.

The training and development was a highlight too, and I came away with practical skills that enhanced both my work and my understanding of how the VPS operates. I'd encourage anyone considering applying to go for it.”

Frederick, 2025-26 Economics and Public Policy Intern

“The DTF internship program was my first internship experience and it was definitely worthwhile. Being able to contribute to the Budget and other funding processes has been a very rewarding and unique experience.

My team and buddies have supported me the whole way and everyone is always open to teach and help you learn, which is something I really love about the people here. The friendships I’ve made through this program are some which I hope to keep for a long time.

I have been given various opportunities to develop my professional skills, especially my analytical and critical thinking, and I would encourage everyone to apply for the program.”

Joanna, 2023 Accounting and Finance Intern
