PATH’s Epidemic Preparedness and Response (EPR) initiative leads several projects and initiatives that support Global Health Security and aim to strengthen global capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats. These include the five-year, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-funded Global Health Security projects; the State Department STRIDES (Strengthening Infectious disease Detection Systems) Project. The Epidemic Preparedness and Response program is seeking an intern to be based in Dakar, Senegal.

The STRIDES project aims to strengthen infectious disease detection, surveillance, and response systems, in support of national priorities and using a multisectoral "One Health" approach. It covers several key technical areas, including epidemiological surveillance, health information systems, laboratory systems, health emergency management, infection prevention and control, as well as biosafety and biosecurity.

Proposed activities for the internship

  • Support the implementation and maintenance of DHIS2-based surveillance systems.
  • Collect, clean, validate, and manage surveillance and program datasets.
  • Develop scripts and automated workflows for data processing using Python or R.
  • Explore machine learning approaches for surveillance and public health data analysis
  • Develop predictive models for trend analysis, outbreak detection, or risk identification.

Description of skills and experience the intern should have

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Masters degree in IT, Data Science or its equivalent.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Basic understanding of deep learning frameworks
  • Knowledge of machine learning techniques
  • Proficiency in Python or R
  • Experience in data analysis or digital systems
  • Exposure to machine learning or AI projects
