Position Summary

Position Summary: 

The student worker position of Peer Tutor/ Mentor at the UNM-Gallup TRIO/Student Support Services (SSS) program has a main two (2) part component that focuses on tutoring and mentoring for students of the SSS program also including various other job duties. The tutoring component requires assisting students in college courses. The applicant chooses to specialize in a specific college course but must be able to show documented experience (transcript) equivalent to grade of “A” or “B” in those areas. The duties areas are outlined as follows:

Tutoring:

              Works with students in-person, by appointment or zoom. Will tutor individually or in groups to review principles, solve problems, review tests, go over writing strategies for essays and research papers, and help students develop a variety of study strategies.

              Assist students who are taking courses that have an emphasis on writing for example, English courses, Social/Behavioral Sciences, Humanities and more.

              Tutor students in various math, English, and Sciences curriculum.

              Will create and host various workshops for students on various topics and subjects. Creativity and research are encouraged and be able to speak in front of a group.

 

Mentoring:

              Provides in-person and virtual peer support to students by assisting them with finding and utilizing many resources, such as scholarships, registrar, financial aid, advisement, test-taking skills, study skills, stress management, etc.

              Through appropriate training, be able to recognize a student’s needs and refer to appropriate help.

              Make personal contact with assigned students. Be available to students during work hours. Maintain a caseload of students every semester and provide weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly progress reports.

              Establish a strong rapport with participants by encouraging, motivating, and building their self-confidence.

              Have basic knowledge of university settings, policies, programs, and services.

 

Must be able to:

 

              Works with support staff to provide and promote a fun, safe and positive study environment.

              Work with staff and students through various online platforms and social media.

              Maintains and updates confidential records, ensuring that ethical and legal guidelines are maintained in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

              Must have the ability and willingness to work with students from diverse cultural backgrounds with various levels of academic preparation pursuing a variety of majors.

              Communicate well with students and provide motivation and positive reinforcement

              Take initiatives to sustain and improve the mission of the TRIO/SSS program

              Assist the TRIO/SSS staff in advertising program specific services (advisement, tutoring, mentoring, public speaking, etc.)

              Assist with special events (Graduation, Welcome Back, Summer Bridge, etc.)

              Complete required/requested training and participate in the CRLA certification requirements

              Help maintain the lab – clean, put away supplies, textbooks, etc.

              Attend staff meetings and trainings

              Keep up to date with skills for subjects that will be tutored

              Must be able to travel as student chaperone on overnight trips with TRIO/SSS participants

              Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:    

              Must be a student of UNM registered at least part-time (6 credit hours)

              One full-time college experience, at least one semester of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

              Must pass either/both English 1120 and Math 1220 with a “B” or better.

·                     Additionally, if looking to specialize in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, etc. the applicant must have passed the courses with a “B” or better

              Minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher

 

Preferred Qualifications:   

              Background similar to participants of TRIO/Student Support Services

              Previous tutoring experience

              Previous mentoring experience

              Previous experience working with adult learners

              Familiarity with Federal TRIO programs

              Advanced courses such as English 1120, Math 1430/1512
