About the Role

Precision Field Technology: Applications Engineer Intern

Join the Mapping and GIS team as an entry-level Applications Engineer to help shape the future of field data collection and asset management. In this role, you will be deeply involved in the development cycle of our TerraFlex mobile software and cloud-based systems, ensuring that our positioning technology delivers the accuracy and reliability that professionals in surveying and utility mapping depend on every day.

What Makes This Role Great:

This internship offers hands-on experience across the entire product ecosystem, from field data collection to cloud integration. You will have the unique opportunity to perform end-to-end system testing on real-world scenarios, using professional-grade GNSS receivers and office software like ESRI ArcGISPro, while directly influencing product improvements through your feedback to Engineers and Product Managers.

Key Exciting Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field data collection and receiver characterization to verify the precision of mapping hardware and software.

  • Perform device compatibility testing across Android and iOS platforms to ensure seamless user experiences.

  • Execute end-to-end system testing by setting up mock customer projects and analyzing data in office software like MapViewer and TerraOffice.

  • Identify and report software bugs or improvements, and verify fixes within the product development cycle.

  • Collaborate in weekly test team sync-ups to summarize findings and highlight critical issues for the development team.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Currently working towards a tertiary qualification in Surveying, Geography, Geoscience, or a related engineering field.

  • High attention to detail with strong communication and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to take ownership of assignments and work effectively as part of a highly collaborative team.

  • A willingness to work outdoors when required for field data collection and system validation.

  • Technical curiosity and a passion for user-centric design.

Bonus Points For

  • Experience with GIS software such as ESRI ArcGISPro.

  • Familiarity with cloud-based software systems or mobile application testing.

  • Previous exposure to GPS/GNSS hardware.

Location: Christchurch, New Zealand 

Travel Requirement: Local field testing

Based at Trimble’s NZ headquarters in Christchurch, New Zealand (handily located on the Little River Link Cycleway). Our office is home to over 400 Trimble employees, where you can enjoy free parking, securely covered bike sheds, an onsite gym, showers, and an active social club.
