Job Description:

Internship Assignment

The facilities within the Schoonebeek Oil Field are distributed across 18 oil production locations, a pigging station, an Oil Treatment Facility (OBI), a Heat and Power Plant (WKC), and several sites dedicated to water transportation and injection.

These facilities are interconnected through an extensive network of pipelines used for the transportation of oil, water, steam, and gas. Together, they form the Schoonebeek Oil System, in which production, treatment, transportation, and support activities are fully integrated.

Within this system, crude oil is produced from the production wells and transported to the Oil Treatment Facility for further processing. Produced water is treated and transported through the water handling system for injection. The Combined Heat and Power Plant supplies the energy and steam required to support the production process.

Following an extended period of shutdown, the Schoonebeek Oil System is expected to resume production in August 2026. This restart provides a unique opportunity for an intern to be actively involved in the commissioning and start-up phase of a large-scale industrial production system and to contribute to process optimization from the very beginning of operations.

The internship will primarily be based at the Schoonebeek main site within the Operations Department, where safety, production optimization, and continuous improvement are key priorities. The main site comprises the Oil Treatment Facility (OTF) and the Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHP). These facilities house the central processing units where produced oil and water are treated and where the energy and steam required for oil field operations are generated.

Depending on the specific internship assignment, site visits to the oil production locations and other facilities within the Schoonebeek Oil System may also be included, providing exposure to the complete production chain and a comprehensive understanding of the interaction between the various installations.

Goals and Objectives

Internship Assignment

As part of the production restart, the internship will focus on analysing and optimizing steam and chemical consumption within the production process. These resources represent a significant component of operational expenditure and have a direct impact on the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of operations.

The intern will be responsible for:

  • Gaining an understanding of the applications and functions of steam and chemicals within the production process.
  • Collecting, analyzing, and evaluating consumption data against design criteria and operational benchmarks.
  • Identifying potential losses, inefficiencies, and opportunities for optimization.
  • Investigating the key factors influencing steam and chemical consumption.
  • Developing recommendations to optimize consumption without compromising safety, production performance, or asset integrity.
  • Quantifying the potential operational and financial benefits of the proposed improvements.
  • Presenting findings, conclusions, and recommendations to the Operations team.

This assignment offers a unique opportunity for the intern to make a direct contribution to the successful restart and optimization of the Schoonebeek Oil System while gaining valuable experience in a complex industrial operating environment.
