About the Role

Position Summary

We are looking for a legal intern to join our International Arbitration practice in the Shanghai office. You will be joining a truly international team led by a lawyer who has practised in the US, UK, Hong Kong and Singapore, and who specializes in international arbitration and dispute resolution across the world. To thrive in this role, you will need strong academic credentials and a genuine passion for international arbitration, litigation and both oral and written advocacy.

The internship is for 3 months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and business needs.

Our Practice Area

White & Case has a long history in China, having established its first office in Hong Kong in 1978, and has been practicing in China for 40 years.

Our Mainland China Practice team advises on market-leading transactions, demonstrating experience in banking, capital markets, corporate/M&A, international arbitration, white collar/investigation and international trade.

Our team is composed of English, US and Singapore-qualified lawyers, as well as lawyers trained in PRC law. This combination of qualifications ensures we are deeply connected to the local business community, and our deal experience over many years means we understand how to help our clients achieve their strategic objectives in Chinese and foreign markets. The majority of our lawyers are fluent in Mandarin and English.

We work with an almost equal balance of local and multinational corporations in China in their business and transactional activities across a broad spectrum of industries, including those which are highly regulated.

As a legal intern in our international arbitration practice, you will be working in an exciting environment, handling challenging, time-sensitive matters that demand a dynamic approach and resilience of character.

Duties and Accountabilities

  • Conduct legal research under the laws of various legal jurisdictions relevant to cross-border disputes and international arbitration
  • Assist with factual and legal analysis of disputes
  • Translate and review legal documents, correspondence and evidence
  • Assist with preparation of submissions, memoranda, case summaries and hearing bundles in arbitration matters
  • Assist in the preparation for and conduct of hearings, including organizing materials and supporting counsel during hearings
  • Help with the coordination of arbitration filings, procedural steps and case timelines
  • Handle ad hoc assignments

Qualifications

  • Law Student (LLB or LLM) from a top China law school, exchange in an English-speaking jurisdiction preferred
  • Excellent academic credentials
  • Strong legal analysis skills and interest in both common and civil law systems as well as international legal frameworks
  • Prior internship experience in disputes, arbitration or litigation is preferred
  • Experience in international moot competitions such as Vis or Jessup is preferred
  • Native Mandarin and fluent English is essential, with strong English reading and writing skills
  • Hardworking with attention to detail
  • Computer literacy
