The Operations division and the Retail department at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston offer an engaging and enriching Museum experience that exceeds customer expectations. Our mission is to create a retail shop that educates, entertains, enlightens, and encourages awareness of the rich artistic heritage represented by the Museum’s collection. Retail Design is responsible for leading product development of exclusive items to be sold in the shops using art from the MFA collection. The Retail Designer also creates web assets, social media content and store signage for the shop.
The Retail department seeks an enthusiastic Retail Design & Web Intern to assist the Retail Team in designing digital assets for the shop site (mfashop.com) and social channels including product photography for web. The Retail Intern will be responsible for tasks including formatting graphics for web, creating social content for the shop and executing product photography for online product listings.
Under the supervision of the Retail Designer, the Retail Intern will gain hands-on experience working within a Retail department and collaborating with teams throughout the Museum. To support the MFA’s three gift shops and online store, the Retail Design & Web Intern will develop their skills in Adobe design programs and content creation while managing multiple projects across platforms.
The selected intern will gain an understanding of cross-institutional collaboration, retail design standards and the technical steps to design a store website and execute digital marketing materials.
Ideal candidates must be able to commit to work onsite 15-20 hours weekly, between 9am-5pm Monday-Wednesday between Sept 11 – Dec 11. Additionally, interns must attend orientation on Fri, Sept 11, (10am-3:30pm), and the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course from 12:30-2:30pm on the following Fridays: Sept 18, Sept 25, Oct 2, Oct 9, Oct 16, Oct 23, Oct 30, Nov 6, Nov 13, Nov 20, and Dec 4.
The intern will be paid at a rate of $16.80 per hour and will receive a $90 per month transportation subsidy.

Essential Functions:
The Retail Web & Design Intern will assist in executing a variety of design tasks in collaboration with the Retail Team. Functions will include:
- Assisting in creating digital assets for retail shop mfashop.com, email marketing, and social including graphics and photography.
- Assisting with product photography and editing photos for product listings on site
- Generating and posting content for social channels including Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, TikTok and YouTube @shopmfaboston with a focus on video content
- Writing Blog content for the shop website
- Pulling online research where applicable to inform social and Ecomm strategy
- *Prepare and offer a 3-minute final synoptic presentation of the internship as part of the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course.
Qualifications:
- Enrolled in an undergraduate program in Design, concurrent with the internship period.
- Interest in learning more about the Museum of Fine Arts and contributing to design within the Retail department.
- Demonstrable working knowledge of Adobe design programs: Photoshop, Illustrator and In-Design
- Interest in digital design and social strategy
- Excellent organizational skills and keen attention to detail
- Experience creating website graphics.
- Experience with product photography is a plus.
- Experience creating video content for social platforms (TikTok, Reels and YouTube) is a plus.
