About The Company
The Austen Riggs Center is known for its internationally-recognized tradition of providing intensive psychodynamic psychotherapy in a voluntary, open, and non-coercive community. Patients not helped in other settings can often benefit from deeper, more thorough psychodynamic evaluation and treatment. For over 100 years, the Riggs has offered residential psychiatric treatment based on intensive, four-times-weekly individual psychotherapy, provided by psychiatrists. From residential to supervised and unsupervised apartment living, Riggs provides continuity of care with the same interdisciplinary team throughout a patient's stay. Treating an average of 60 patients, Riggs remains one of the few psychiatric treatment centers in the United States committed to the intensive work necessary to help patients take charge of their lives. Erikson Institute for Education and Research Erik H. Erikson, renowned humanist psychoanalyst and former Riggs staff member, recognized that individuals could not be understood apart from their psychosocial and historical contexts. Riggs' Erikson Institute develops this connection by promoting education and research in psychodynamic thought and treatment and by applying the clinical learning to the problems of the larger society. The Erikson Institute aims to bring the work of Riggs into dialogue with other mental health professionals, human service institutions, and scholars from a range of disciplines. The Erikson Institute includes: A Research Department and internships A Fellowship program in psychiatry and clinical psychology The Erikson Scholar program Lectures and workshops for mental health professionals An organizational consultation service, especially for human service institutions
About the Role

Austen Riggs Online IOP Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Training Certificate Program

Description

The Erikson Institute for Education, Research, and Advocacy of the Austen Riggs Center offers a nine-month, fully online IOP psychodynamic psychotherapy training certificate program for doctoral-level clinicians in the state of Massachusetts or licensed clinical social workers in the state of Massachusetts beginning in November of 2026.

Participants in the certificate program will receive a stipend of $3,900 and can expect to:

  • Increase their professional and clinical expertise in helping patients negotiate developmental tasks of young adulthood
  • Develop the ability to make psychodynamic formulations and to use these formulations to frame the task of intensive short-term therapy
  • Experience and learn the benefits of working within a psychodynamic team approach

The program features five hours a week of psychotherapy training and didactics related to treating a young adult population using a developmental and psychodynamic team approach. Participants carry a caseload of one patient enrolled in the Online IOP whom they see twice weekly for a minimum of six weeks (and up to several months).

Participants will join one 50-minute team meeting per week, and attend a weekly course seminar taught by Austen Riggs Center staff. In addition, participants present their work with their patients at case conferences, utilizing supervision support to formulate the case and present the therapy work.

Training Seminars will cover the following:

  • Key concepts in Psychodynamic Theory
  • Beginning treatment: Boundaries, role, and the frame
  • Psychoanalytic diagnosis: How development interacts with character structure, conflicts, and defenses
  • Technique + supporting research
  • Psychodynamic formulation and therapeutic action
  • Psychodynamic team approach to integrated treatment

All meetings are conducted over Zoom (all times Eastern). Seminars take place on Monday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Team meetings are on Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. and patients are seen on Tuesdays and Fridays at a mutually workable time. Supervision times are determined by the participant and their supervisor.

Participants may elect to attend group supervision on Fridays at 9:30 a.m. and have access to the Austen Riggs Center online library. Participants are eligible to receive continuing education credits from the seminars and a program certificate.
