Job Description:

Are you interested in how Medicaid policy moves from federal requirements, state legislation, and program priorities into real-world implementation? Join the Medicaid and Long-Term Care team at DHHS as a Medicaid Policy Intern.

This internship offers hands-on experience in state Medicaid policy, program planning, legislative implementation, and cross-divisional project support. The intern will assist with the rollout of various projects related to recent federal changes, implementation of bills passed during the 2026 Nebraska legislative session, and planning for new or revised Medicaid initiatives. This role is ideal for a student interested in public health, Medicaid, health and public policy, healthcare administration, government operations, or public service.

The intern will work alongside policy staff, legal partners, program specialists, and operational teams to support Nebraska Medicaid priorities and help improve access, quality, and program integrity for Medicaid beneficiaries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support planning, tracking, and coordination for Medicaid-specific implementation projects.

  • Assist with implementation activities for bills passed during the 2026 legislative session, including research, policy summaries, timelines, and internal tracking tools.

  • Track requirements and progress of legislative bill implementation and policy issues related to Medicaid and health and human services.

  • Conduct research and analysis on Medicaid policy, eligibility, benefits, federal guidance, state options, and implementation approaches.

  • Assist with drafting one-pagers, presentations, meeting notes, leadership updates, and internal communications.

  • Support program planning activities, including identifying implementation needs, operational impacts, compliance considerations, and stakeholder questions.

  • Participate in internal meetings and, when appropriate, meetings with external partners or stakeholders.

  • Help organize project materials, policy resources, and implementation documents to support team coordination.

What You’ll Gain

  • Practical experience in Medicaid policy, program planning, and implementation.

  • Exposure to federal and state health policy priorities, including innovative Medicaid implementation work.

  • Firsthand understanding of how legislation, federal guidance, and agency decisions shape Medicaid operations.

  • Mentorship from experienced public service professionals.

  • Opportunities to build skills in policy analysis, project coordination, stakeholder communication, and implementation strategy.

  • Meaningful experience supporting programs that serve Nebraskans.
