A Chaplain Resident is a student in training to become a professional clinical chaplain. In this role, you will spend approximately 40% of your time participating in educational seminars and 60% providing spiritual care to patients and families. You will respond to deaths and other urgent referrals as priorities, visit patients before surgery, and may lead worship services or meditation sessions. You will also provide on-call coverage and attend codes on behalf of the department, supporting the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, families, and caregivers while gaining hands-on clinical experience in a healthcare setting.
This position serves patients, staff members, and families by providing excellent spiritual care. The Chaplain Resident serves for one year and receives professional education to prepare for chaplaincy practice, completing the program each August as new Residents are contracted to provide spiritual care and continue their professional education.
A caregiver in this role works days from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with on-call requirements.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Attend to the spiritual needs of patients, families and staff.
Lead worship services.
Counsel employees in distress.
Participate in interdisciplinary teams.
Provide sacraments as requested.
Prepare and conduct memorial services as requested.
Write bereavement notes to families.
Serve in the on-call rotation for overnight and weekend coverage.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Bachelor's degree
Twelve months of initial commitment
Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision
Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Master of Divinity or other relevant areas (Pastoral Care, etc.)
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
Must be able to climb stairs, pull, push and facilitate movement of the patient.
Must have normal or correctable vision and hearing to be able to hear normal conversations.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
