About the Role

Fincantieri Marine Group is hiring a Youth Apprentice in the Manufacturing Department at our Green Bay, WI Shipyard location. This is a 1st shift role, 10 -- 20 hours per week, with flexibility in scheduling dependent upon the youth apprentice school schedule.

Position Summary

The Youth Apprentice Welder will work in the area of aluminum fabrication while developing foundational skills in welding processes, blueprint reading, and manufacturing practices. This role works under the guidance of experienced mentors to gain hands-on experience and progress toward independent skilled work within the shipyard.

 

 

Essential Functions

  • Assist in layout and assembly of aluminum weldment, securing parts and assemblies according to specifications/drawings using straight edge, combination square, calipers and ruler
  • Position and secure parts using various hand tools, porta powers, and lever operated chain jacks
  • Weld or tack aluminum parts together using spot welding gun or FCAW equipment to specified tolerances
  • Cut aluminum plate/shapes using powered saws and hand shears
  • Dismantle aluminum assemblies or cuts scrap metal, using saws, routers or plasma-arc equipment
  • Perform grinding and cleaning of weld areas, including removal of slag, spatter, and general deburring
  • Complete required inspection and quality control processes
  • Participate as member of crane rigging crew
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Required Skills

  • Ability to weld using manual or semi-automatic techniques
  • Must be punctual and willing to take direction from senior employees/mentors.
  • Must come to work with a good attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints
  • Ability to operate various hand tools
  • Ability to work in inclement weather (cold, hot, rain, snow, etc.)
  • Must have basic organizational, time management, written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have ability to maintain confidentiality and a professional demeanor
  • Must adhere to ISO and OSHA policies established by FMG and have high values for safety awareness

 

 

Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in High School or an approved equivalent program
  • Exposure to welding and general knowledge of blueprints and hand tools is preferred
  • Applicants must be enrolled in an eligible CESA program to be considered

Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing job duties, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand or walk; use hands and arms to grasp, handle, manipulate, or feel objects and controls; stoop, bend, kneel, and crouch; and speak or hear. The employee may lift and/or move up to 35lbs regularly and up to 50lbs occasionally. Work is performed both inside and outside in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, wet, humid, dry, and arid climates. The employee may also be required to work in confined spaces and at varying heights. Frequent use of PPE is required to minimize noise exposure, moving machinery, weather elements, and other potential hazards, including the risk of injury.
