The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

Role Purpose

This co‑op role provides a hands-on opportunity to support plant-wide manufacturing initiatives with a primary focus on automation and manufacturing related projects. The co‑op will partner with engineering, operations, quality, and maintenance teams to identify opportunities for automation, improve process capability, and drive cross-functional improvements across multiple manufacturing areas. This role offers broad exposure to equipment, processes, and systems within a production environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support identification and implementation of automation opportunities across manufacturing processes
  • Work with engineering and maintenance teams to support equipment upgrades, controls, and process automation projects
  • Identify and implement improvements to cycle time, throughput, and quality
  • Conduct process mapping, value stream analysis, and waste identification across multiple production areas
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective actions for recurring process or equipment issues
  • Develop visual dashboards, metrics, and reporting tools to drive decision-making
  • Utilize AI tools to analyze data and improve manufacturing processes
  • Collaborate with operators, technicians, engineers, and quality teams across departments
  • Assist in developing standard work, SOPs, and training materials for new processes or automation systems

Experiences/Education - Required

  • Currently enrolled in a Mechanical, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, Industrial, or Electrical Engineering program
  • Strong interest in automation, manufacturing systems, or process engineering
  • Ability to work in a hands-on plant environment

Preferred Skills

  • Exposure to automation systems, PLCs, robotics, or controls
  • Experience with data analysis tools (Excel, Minitab, Power BI, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing / Six Sigma concepts
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, process flows, and system interactions
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
