WWF International expanded its global Youth Engagement Programme for 18-30 year olds in 2024. The Programme, which provides internships, youth-led grassroots leadership programme and virtual mentorship opportunities, aims to inspire a new generation of environmental advocates and leaders, especially young women, in their countries and communities to actively contribute to youth and community-led conservation and help drive positive change*.

WWF Pacific is working together with communities and partners towards the following: Al Pacific peoples and nations are empowered, climate resilient and prosperous, with nature thriving and visibly and measurably recovering - a ‘People and Nature Positive Pacific’. From Papua New Guinea with the third largest tropical rainforest in the world and home to over seven percent of the world’s total number of species, to the Solomon Islands with record numbers of fish species; to the world’s third longest continuous barrier reef system in Fiji. The richness and diversity of species found in the Pacific is globally significant. Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands both form part of the Coral Triangle, the centre of the world’s marine biodiversity. Some of the most coral reefs less exposed to climate change are found in Fiji and Solomon Islands. WWF works across Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and Solomon Islands with offices in each country and a regional hub to serve communities and protect this region’s rich and unique biodiversity. We have three goals that outline our ambition and the cross-cutting nature of our work and what we are working towards long-term: empowered Pacific peoples, integrated ocean management and climate resilient Pacific nations. Our overarching focus is on community and ecosystem resilience combined with area-based conservation, working towards 30x30 and safeguarding the lands and waters of the Pacific. We focus on conservation priorities across 30x30: community-led conservation, sustainable fisheries and blue foods, conserving marine species, reducing deforestation, Pacific policy leadership, Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), youth engagement, and mainstreaming and sustainable blue economy.

The intern will support WWF-Fiji’s conservation initiatives, primarily within the Great Sea Reef Programme and the Great Astrolabe Reef Programme and thematic functions.

Key responsibilities include:

● Research & Documentation: Conducting surveys, data collection, and digital recording to support project monitoring and evaluation.

● Representation: Under the guidance of a WWF Staff, attend and contribute to partner meetings, effectively representing WWF interests and perspectives.

● Project Implementation: Participating in field-based conservation activities, aiding in the practical roll out of WWF projects.

● Capacity Building: Engaging in relevant training, workshops, and conferences to enhance conservation knowledge and skills.

● Community Engagement & Networking: Mobilizing and empowering local youth; building connections between young people and community-based organizations (CSOs).

• Reporting: Providing regular field updates and monthly progress reports to programme managers.

• Research (surveys) and documentation to assist with ensuring the implementation of data collection and management.
• Participating in meetings and workshops representing the WWF-Fiji country office with partners and stakeholders at the provincial, districts, community and local CSOs and performing duties in support of those meetings and workshops, under the guidance of a WWF staff.
• Stakeholder Engagement – Under the guidance of a WWF staff, establish networking with local Civil Society Organizations (CSO) and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) on the ground.
• Work closely with WWF-Fiji project teams across the conservation programme to ensure that the relevant protocols are followed in the engagement processes.

● Youth engagement through training, awareness, meetings to provide peer support to local youths through mobilization. Taking into consideration equal participation of gender, and inclusive of persons with disabilities.

● Provide support to WWF-Fiji project field activities implemented by conservation programme and project teams

● Support with community engagement activities; and assist with community outreach and awareness activities involving youths’ participation.

● As part of your capacity building you will be required to participate in training, workshops, seminars or conferences relevant to the WWF context.

● Ensure reporting in the line with WWF-Fiji protocols.

Relevant tertiary qualifications in any of these fields of marine biology, biology, environmental science, social studies, international development, or other relevant fields.

Relevant work experience will be considered in cases where the candidate does not have a tertiary degree.
