Job Summary
The Chaplain in Training delivers compassionate, non-denominational spiritual support in alignment with patient beliefs and needs. Working under supervision, this role conducts spiritual assessments, offers brief counseling, and participates in interdisciplinary care rounds as assigned. The position supports patients across age groups and care settings including acute, outpatient, and behavioral health.
Essential Functions
- Provide skillful pastoral listening and emotional support during times of illness, trauma, or loss.
- Conduct spiritual assessments using accepted models of pastoral care.
- Participate in care team meetings and coordinate with other disciplines to support holistic care.
- Deliver non-sectarian prayers and rituals in response to patient or family needs.
- Document encounters in accordance with HIPAA and organizational standards.
- Reflect on clinical encounters through supervision, group process, and self-assessment as part of professional formation.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
- Strong empathic communication and active listening skills.
- Ability to support diverse religious and cultural expressions.
- Basic understanding of spiritual assessment and clinical documentation.
- Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries and confidentiality.
Education
- Current Enrollment in an accredited Master’s program in Divinity, Theology, Pastoral Studies, or equivalent (Required)
Licenses/Certifications
- Other: Ecclesiastical endorsement Upon Hire (Preferred) And
- Other: Enrollment in a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program Upon Hire (Preferred)
Experience
- 1+ years pastoral experience in a faith community or healthcare setting, or completion of one CPE unit (Required)
