Software Engineer Intern

About The Role:

We are on the hunt for a Summer Intern to join our growing team at Generate Zero as a Software Developer. Working alongside our dev team, you will bring a blend of creativity and technical ability to help us design and build exciting new features for the platform.

As part of our agile squad, you will contribute directly to the experimental development of new product modules and features aligned with our R&D roadmap. This includes researching and prototyping innovative solutions (such as generative AI tools), and helping us to improve scalability, performance, and user experience across the platform.

This role will initially be a 10-week contract, full time over the summer (dates flexible), however there is potential for the intern position to roll onto part-time work after this period.

You will be responsible for:

• Working with the Generate Zero team to understand requirements, contribute to design discussions, and help build features for our platform
• Assisting in the development and maintenance of a clean, reusable, and well-structured codebase
• Tackling technical challenges with support from the team, and learning to debug and problem-solve effectively
• Sharing ideas and thinking creatively about how we can improve the product and user experience
• Staying curious about new technologies and development trends, and learning best practices for writing reliable, maintainable software

What you will bring:

• A can-do attitude, passion for problem-solving, and strong communication skills
• Experience developing full-stack software using modern languages and frameworks (Node.js, TypeScript, React preferred), through either coursework or practical experience
• An understanding of Agile development practices and workflows
• A love for collaboration and a willingness to contribute to a supportive, idea-sharing team environment

• To be considered for this role, you must be studying, or have recently completed (within 12 months) studies at a New Zealand tertiary education, at NZQA level 6 – 10, with science, technology, engineering, design or business

• This role is funded through a Callaghan Innovation R&D grant and is offered as a 
  fixed-term, 10-week internship in the first instance
