About The Company
Data Insight helps New Zealand organisations turn data and AI into real-world impact. Since 2013, we’ve partnered with public and private sector organisations to make sense of complex data, build confidence in decision-making, and unlock opportunities for sustainable growth. We work with organisations operating in complex, enterprise-scale environments to design, build, and embed modern data capabilities that deliver real business value. Our work spans the full data lifecycle, from data strategy and governance through to cloud data platforms, analytics engineering, AI enablement, and capability uplift. What sets Data Insight apart is our focus on strong foundations. We help organisations get the basics right, including data quality, architecture, governance, and operating models, so analytics and AI initiatives are scalable, responsible, and sustainable. This reduces risk, improves adoption, and ensures insight can be trusted at every level of the organisation. Our team combines their technical expertise with practical business understanding. We work closely with leaders, delivery teams, and frontline users to align data initiatives with organisational goals, regulatory obligations, and real-world constraints. Whether supporting enterprise transformation programmes, lifting data and AI literacy, or enabling better decision-making through analytics, we prioritise clarity, collaboration, and outcomes. Data Insight is trusted by organisations operating in regulated and high-complexity environments who need more than dashboards or tools. We help build the capability, confidence, and culture required to make data work in practice, today and into the future.
About the Role

About The Role:

We are on the hunt for a Summer Intern to join our growing team at Generate Zero as a Data Engineer. Working closely with our Data team to build, maintain and troubleshoot the pipelines that move client data into the Generate Zero Platform.

You’ll learn from experienced engineers as you write for-production pipelines and automation using SQL and Python, work with cloud data platforms, and see how your work supports accurate, audit-ready sustainability reporting for our clients.

This role will initially be a 10-week contract, full time over the summer (dates flexible), however there is potential for the intern position to roll onto part-time work after this period.

You will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the development, testing and maintenance of client data pipelines
  • Use a combination of tools and stacks (Azure Storage, Fabric, python, SQL, postgres, SQL Server) to streamline, automate and develop quality assurance, version control and lineage capabilities for our data operations
  • Writing and troubleshooting SQL queries to extract, transform and validate client data
  • Helping to load and organise data from a range of sources (files, APIs, databases) into cloud-based data platforms
  • Working closely with the data team to build out data ingestion templates and new data connectors to improve our client implementation process
  • Running and automating data quality checks and helping to identify and resolve data issues
  • Supporting the data-side of client implementations onto our platform
  • Documenting your work clearly, including data processes, pipeline logic and any issues encountered
  • Participating in code reviews and taking feedback on board to continuously improve your technical skills
  • Supporting the wider data team with ad-hoc analysis and data tasks as needed

What you will bring:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification (or equivalent self-taught or bootcamp experience) in computer science, data, engineering, mathematics or a related field
  • Some exposure to SQL through study, personal projects, internships or coursework
  • Basic familiarity with Python or another programming language
  • Some knowledge of using environments like Azure or AWS for building, storing, or transforming data
  • Comfortable with handling data in different formats (e.g. json, csv, relational database)
  • An interest in data transformation, quality control, cloud platforms and how businesses use data to make decisions
  • A love for collaboration and a willingness to contribute to a supportive, idea-sharing team environment

Why join us?

  • Work on stuff that truly matters and make a real impact while growing your skills
  • Work with a purpose-driven organisation with global growth ambitions, dedicated to making a positive impact in the world
  • Enjoy a fun start-up culture and collaborate with our two sister companies to create a vibrant and supportive work environment
  • Great opportunity to work in a real-world environment and gain skills from an experienced development and product team
  • Join an active and engaging social club, with regular events and activities to foster team bonding and build meaningful connections
