About The Company
The mission of the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) is to empower youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood through comprehensive and innovative programs that address youths'​ social, academic, and career needs. Since 1968, LAYC has been committed to transforming the lives of low-income young people and their families. LAYC offers multi-service, comprehensive, and bilingual enrichment, prevention, and intervention programs and opportunities in education, workforce readiness, housing, community building, mental health services, arts, and healthy recreation to over 4,000 individuals each year. LAYC has special expertise in serving underserved youth, low-income teen parents, homeless youth, youth in foster care and juvenile justice systems, and youth facing mental health, substance abuse, or complex family issues. While LAYC initially worked with Latino youth of diverse backgrounds, today all youth -- Latino, African American, African -- are supported by LAYC at sites in the District of Columbia and Maryland's Prince George's and Montgomery Counties.
About the Role

LAYC-DC AmeriCorps Education program provides the opportunity for those who are considering a career in youth development, social service, to try their hand in a real-world setting and gain tons of useful skills. AmeriCorps members serve their communities by working as Youth Developers serving elementary, middle, high schools, and young adult youth. LAYC-DC AmeriCorps Education Department has 7 AmeriCorps positions (both 40hr/week Full Time and Partial 30hr/week Full Time) available that will provide support to our Education Department Programs.

Latin American Youth Center’s (LAYC) mission is to empower youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood, through comprehensive and innovative programs that address youths’ social, academic, and career needs. To achieve this mission, LAYC provides services and opportunities to approximately 4,000 individuals annually to support academic achievement, promote healthy behavior, and guide youth towards successful adulthood.

Essential Responsibilities

After School Programs 2 Full Time Positions (40hrs/week) & 4 Partial-Full time Positions (30hrs/week)

  • Build mentoring relationships with youth in an out-of-school time setting.
  • Provide highly focused academic tutoring.
  • Facilitate enrichment activities according to age-appropriate curriculum and based on your interests of sports, art, dance, cooking, etc.
  • Provide wrap around service support to our youth and families.
  • Assist in coordinating and organizing events, field trips, service project events.

 

Essential Responsibilities

Post-Secondary Programs 1 (40hr/week) Full Time Position

  • Assist Community Schools program staff with support in college and career focused resources and opportunities for youth.
  • Work with program staff to develop lesson plans based on the College Access Curriculum.
  • Lead in the facilitation and implementation of workshops for youth’s academic and professional success, including, but not limited to, financial aid, adapting to college life, planning academic schedules, career exploration, educational attainment, leadership development, and job readiness training.
  • Assist in developing and coordinating field trips to visit colleges and job sites, assist in developing and coordinating career panels.
  • Support program staff with the Summer Youth Employment Program.
  • Collect and enter data weekly into LAYC’s integrated data management system to monitor outcomes and improve program quality.

 

All Positions Responsibilities

  • Build healthy mentoring relationships with youth and community members.
  • Use Positive Youth Development strategies to help students achieve program outcomes and individual goals.
  • Participate in training and certifications on critical aspects of youth development, education, social services, etc.
  • Assist in running social media accounts of the LAYC DC AmeriCorps program and other social media accounts in the department.
  • Receive hands-on supervision to guide you through your learning process.
  • Learn how to collect accurate data to track the effectiveness of our program.
  • As a team, members complete a minimum of 2 service projects.
  • As a team, members help recruit 60 volunteers for their service projects.
  • Members participate in trainings on Fridays from 9am - 6 pm.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be over 17 years of age or 17 and with parental consent form. 
  • Have completed a high school diploma or equivalent OR commit to obtaining a high school diploma or equivalent before the end of contract. 
  • Clearances - Required to complete MPD, FBI, State of Residence (if not Washington DC) and the National Sex Offender Registry. 
  • US Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident.

  • Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills.
  • Flexible, energetic, positive individual with commitment to youth development in a high quality, respectful environment.
  • Ability to work well and communicate with culturally diverse populations.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. 
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of community and local resources.
  • Flexible schedule, including occasional evenings/weekends/federal holidays for events.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 10 lbs. May require the ability to travel locally and/or regionally.
