Satellite AI&T Technician - Intern

LOCATION: Kirtland AFB

JOB STATUS: Part-time

CLEARANCE: Secret (ability to obtain)

Astrion is seeking a Space Systems Intern to support spacecraft engineering, assembly, integration, test and ground system development support for the Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base. 

This role is ideal for enthusiastic students who are currently pursuing higher education in engineering, science, mechanical trades, or related technical field. The internship will support an aerospace engineering laboratory on Kirtland AFB where the Small Satellite Portfolio designs, builds, and tests spacecraft for on-orbit experiments. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS 

  • High school diploma and current enrollment in a technical undergraduate degree or certificate program. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Ability to work independently and execute technical tasking 
  • Effective communicator with both technical and non-technical stakeholders 
  • Ability to read technical documentation, manuals, and procedures 
  • Strong attention to details, cleanliness, and safety 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS 

  • Knowledge of mechanical systems and tools 
  • Previous experience with technician roles, including machining and/or HVAC systems 
  • Previous experience with clean rooms, electronics laboratory, and related equipment 
  • Experience in SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software and design  
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python) 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Execute technical tasking from lead technicians and program managers 
  • Support aerospace lab activities including clean room construction, system upgrades and maintenance, and controlleintegration support (i.e., two-man rule)  
  • Tool inventory control and maintenance 
  • Machining projects (hands-on work with mills, laser engravers, cold saw, and bandsaw) 
  • Laboratory maintenance, cleaning, and access control
