Herzog Contracting Corp. is currently seeking Quality Engineer Interns across the United States in Philadelphia, PA; Springfield, VA; Washington D.C.; San Antonio, TX; Denver, CO; Cincinnati, OH; Bakersfield, CA; and Gastonia, NC to join our team.
As a Quality Engineer Intern, you will be integrated directly into our construction operations, assuming day-to-day responsibilities comparable to our full-time staff. You will gain exposure to all disciplines within heavy civil construction while working alongside our Project Quality Manager and Quality Inspectors. This hands-on role is designed to develop your understanding of project plans and the processes required to build a contract-compliant project. Quality Professionals are the guardians of the project's specifications through a blend of technical knowledge, sharp attention to detail, and strong communication skills. You will learn how to verify and ensure the permanent infrastructure being built will perform as intended for its entire design life.
Duties and Responsibilities:

- Analyze contract documents, technical specifications, and design drawings to understand quality requirements.
- Assist in managing and organizing all quality-related documentation, including inspection reports, test results, submittals, and certifications.
- Conduct daily field inspections of work-in-progress (e.g., earthwork, excavation, concrete pours, structural steel erection, paving, pile driving) to verify compliance with plans and specs.
- Schedule and witness independent third-party materials testing (e.g., soil compaction, concrete slump/strength, asphalt density, weld inspections).
- Assist in ensuring all materials incorporated into the work are approved and meet the specified standards, including material tags and certifications.
- Work directly with superintendents, foremen, and crews to provide clarity on quality standards and address issues in real-time.
- Assist with documenting and reporting quality status, non-conformances, and trends to the Project Manager and Quality Manager.
- Regular and consistent engagement, participation and promotion of Herzog’s Culture and its essential behaviors are a requirement for this position.
- Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Pursuing a degree.
- Must be flexible in working in both office and field environment as needed.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work with a team
- Must have strong organization skills
- Must be highly motivated
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
- Subject to pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position
- Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.
Physical Requirements:

- Perform light work, occasionally exerting up to 20 pounds of force.
- Able to walk on uneven surfaces.
- Occasionally ascend/descend step ladders and/or stairs.
- Regularly sit and stand for an extended period of time.
- Regularly kneel, bend, and squat.
- Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
- Must be able to hear and distinguish auditory signals as required by position.
- Able to work in conditions with loud noise; work on/around heavy/moving machinery.
- Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
