About the Role

EMH&T is seeking passionate and talented Land Surveying/Civil Engineering students for paid summer 2027 internships in Columbus, Ohio. We’re looking for a motivated and curious student who thrives on solving problems and taking initiative. The ideal candidate is a proactive learner with a strong sense of responsibility, eager to contribute to real-world projects and collaborate with a diverse team. A positive attitude, adaptability, and communication skills are essential, along with a genuine interest in making a meaningful impact through surveying and engineering.

As part of EMH&T’s Survey division, you will be part of the largest survey group in the state of Ohio and be mentored by a Project Manager or Professional Surveyor. You’ll be immersed in real-world survey projects, collaboration with experienced professionals, and contributing to meaningful work that impacts communities. Your summer experience will include transforming field data using CAD software into working documents and assisting in the preparation of topographic, ALTA and boundary survey, easement descriptions, and terrain modeling. This opportunity offers you the chance to grow your skills, build your network, and prepare for your future career.

  • Strong learning agility — ability to learn new surveying concepts, software, standards, and processes quickly.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills — ability to evaluate information, identify issues, and work through potential solutions.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy, particularly when preparing calculations, plans, reports, data, or other project documents.
  • Technical aptitude and willingness to develop proficiency with engineering/design software such as AutoCAD, GIS, or similar programs.
  • Basic understanding of surveying principles, tools and various methods for graphically describing the location and distribution of land, physical relationships, and characteristics.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions and established procedures while asking appropriate questions when clarification is needed.
  • Organization and time management skills with the ability to prioritize assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate questions, findings, and progress clearly.
  • Teamwork and collaboration — ability to work effectively with surveyors, engineers, designers, project managers, and other team members.
  • Initiative and curiosity — willingness to seek additional knowledge, take ownership of assignments, and look for opportunities to contribute.
  • Ability to accept and apply feedback to improve the quality and efficiency of future work.
  • Professionalism and dependability, including following through on assignments and commitments.
  • Developing understanding of the project lifecycle and how individual assignments contribute to the overall project.
  • Ability to conduct research and gather information from plans, specifications, and other technical sources.
  • Interest in understanding client needs and the business side of surveying, not simply completing technical tasks.
