What You Will Be Doing

ChargePoint is seeking an innovative and driven Power Electronics Controls Engineer Intern to support the modeling and simulation of sophisticated power electronics control systems. The intern will focus on simulating edge-case scenarios before hardware validation. A significant portion of the role involves building and refining Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) systems using Typhoon HIL. The position will contribute meaningfully to the development of robust and reliable control systems.

What You Will Bring to ChargePoint

  • Design and develop control architectures for high-power bidirectional AC-DC and DC-DC converter systems.
  • Evaluate and present various control system design approaches, including their respective advantages and trade-offs.
  • Apply creative problem-solving to define comprehensive test scenarios with well-defined success and failure benchmarks.
  • Develop automated HIL test procedures to improve testing efficiency and reduce turnaround time.
  • Collaborate with teams across firmware, hardware, systems, and regulatory engineering to collect cross-functional requirements and integrate them into the control system's design, modeling, and testing processes.

Requirements

  • Master's or PhD degree (preferred) in Electrical Engineering (POWER ELECTRONICS)
  • 2+ years of proven experience developing Power Electronics products
  • Experience with renewable energy integration using grid-tie inverter systems (solar, BESS, EVSE, etc.).
  • 2+ years of Python programming experience for scripting and automation
  • Strong experience in designing controllers (such as PI, PR, droop, etc.), modelling, and simulation using tools such as PLECS, MATLAB, as well as lab tests.
  • Experience in hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, including testbed setup, real-time simulation, plant modelling, hardware interfaces, test scripting, fault injection, and test result analysis. Typhoon HIL experience is a plus.
  • Strong experience in developing algorithms for harmonics cancellation using feedback approaches.
  • Strong grasp of power electronics principles, including control techniques for inverters, rectifiers, and DC-DC converters (LLC, CLLC, DAB, PFC chargers, DC/DC, inverters, etc.).
  • Solid hands-on experience in high-power labs, with the ability to debug hardware issues related to firmware functions in power converters.
  • Basic understanding of IEEE 1547-2018, IEEE 1547.1-2020, UL1741, CA Rule 21, IEC 61851, Sun Spec Modbus, etc. is a plus.
  • Enjoys working in cross-functional groups, including power electronics firmware engineers, power electronics hardware engineers, regulatory engineers, and systems engineers.
