Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Scope of Position
Corning is seeking a Controls Engineering Intern to support the design, build, and testing of automation equipment. Working under the guidance of z controls engineer, the intern will gain hands-on experience in controls hardware, HMI and PLC development, equipment testing, troubleshooting, and industrial safety.

Responsibilities
- Participate in supervised equipment troubleshooting, debugging, I/O checkout, testing, and commissioning activities.
- Program and debug PLCs and HMIs.
- Assist with wiring, assembly, and layout design.
- Champion a safe working environment in alignment with Corning's safety standard.
Required Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited university.
- Basic understanding of electrical engineering principles, including circuits, electrical machinery, and machine safety concepts.
- Familiarity with hand tools, multimeters, and standard electrical test equipment.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2027 (May-August 2027) with a graduation date of December 2027 or later
- Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity.
- Be willing to work at the posted job location
Desired Qualifications:
- Familiarity with PLC hardware or programming; exposure to Omron Sysmac Studio is a plus.
- Exposure to AutoCAD Electrical or other electrical CAD software.
- Coursework or project experience with programming languages such as C#, C++, or Python.
- Awareness of industrial communication networks such as EtherCAT or EtherNet/IP.
- Basic awareness of electrical codes, machine safety concepts, lockout/tagout, and industrial safety practices.

The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
