About the Role

Summary: 
The City of Lawrence, KS is seeking to fill the position of Transportation Planning Intern. This position is a part-time position (20 hours maximum per week). The Transportation Planning Intern will assist transportation planning staff implementing the Lawrence – Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization work plan through a variety of duties that will involve: conducting public outreach, assisting with meeting setup and preparation, formatting documents, reviewing and editing document content, writing and designing sections of reports, gathering and organizing data, participating in meetings, interacting with other local and state government officials, and experiencing a wide range of activities performed by MPO staff. data quality control, conducting public outreach assisting with meeting setup and preparation, formatting documents, reviewing and editing content, writing sections of reports, gathering and organizing data, participating in meetings, interacting with other local and state government officials, and experiencing a wide range of activities performed by the transportation planning staff. 


This kind of work benefits from a person who has the ability to think analytically, visually, and spatially; and it requires an affinity for attention to detail as well as excellent computer skills. This position is designed to develop the leadership and technical skills of the intern while providing the City with highly capable staff support. Qualifications:
 
This intern is preferred to be a current student (graduate or undergraduate) from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, public administration, geography, environmental studies or a related field. This intern needs to have a willingness to learn transportation planning principles.  

The intern should also have strong computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications. Adobe Creative Cloud and/or ArcGIS  are recommended but not required. This intern will need strong writing and editing skills with a high attention to detail.

 

The candidate must possess a valid driver's license. The successful candidate must also pass a background check.
