About the Role

The Red Hat Open Source and AI Program Office (OSAIPO) team is looking for an intern with an interest in open source software, artificial intelligence, and cloud-native technologies to join us in Ireland, Waterford, starting in January 2027. In this role, you will support Red Hat’s participation in and contribution to strategic upstream AI projects, working with engineers, community members, and cross-functional teams to help advance an open source project and its ecosystem. You’ll contribute to technical and community activities, help research and document project capabilities, and support collaboration with upstream contributors and strategic partners. This internship will give you the opportunity to gain practical experience working in an open source community, develop your technical and collaboration skills, and gain insight into how a major open source technology project is developed and governed.

At Red Hat, you’ll work in an environment that welcomes diverse perspectives, values great ideas, and empowers individuals to contribute meaningfully. Freedom and courage are two of our core values — which means you’ll have the space to take risks, explore the unknown, and grow your strengths. But being a Red Hatter is not just about bravery; it’s also about commitment and follow-through.

Red Hat’s Intern Program is a collaborative effort between the Emerging Talent team and our intern managers. The program is designed to offer a meaningful and well-rounded experience — combining professional development, networking opportunities, social engagement, and impactful work. This is a paid, full-time internship.

What you will do:

  • Participate in strategic upstream AI projects, community and technical activities, including meetings, discussions, issue tracking, and upstream collaboration.

  • Work with OSAIPO community architects, Red Hat engineers and community contributors to understand project priorities, technical requirements, and opportunities for contribution.

  • Research emerging technologies and use cases relevant to strategic upstream AI projects and help communicate findings to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Help track project activity, contributions, issues, and community engagement.

  • Support the creation and maintenance of technical documentation, presentations, and community materials.

  • Engage with open source communities and learn established practices for collaborative software development.

What you will bring:

  • You must be enrolled in an accredited university program in the Republic of Ireland during the full duration of the internship and must be able to join us full-time from January to August 2027

  • Working knowledge of written and spoken English

  • Familiarity with Git and GitHub or similar source-code collaboration platforms.

  • Interest in Linux, cloud-native technologies, artificial intelligence, or open source software.

  • Basic understanding of software development practices such as testing, debugging, issue tracking, and version control.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a distributed, cross-functional, and fast-paced environment.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Curiosity and willingness to learn new technologies and contribute in an open-source environment.

  • Prior participation in open source software projects is a plus, but not required.

Due to the limited number of internship opportunities and the high volume of applications, we may not be able to speak with every candidate. To maximise your chances of moving forward in the process, please ensure your CV clearly outlines your education, relevant projects (link to your git.hub account), and extracurricular activities.

Please apply for a maximum of three internship roles that best match your interests and skills.
