Position Summary:   The Business Operations Application Development Intern will help design and build a web-based application that consolidates flight operations information and aircraft asset tracking into a clearer operational view. Translate user needs into tested features, connect approved internal data sources, and help replace fragmented manual tracking with reliable workflows and reporting. Most coding may be completed with approved AI-assisted development tools, but the intern remains responsible for understanding, testing, and documenting the resulting code. This position will report to the Digital Transformation Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Meet with business users to understand workflows, data definitions, pain points, reporting needs,  and the decisions an application needs to support.
  • Translate requirements into user stories, prototypes, database designs, interfaces, and working application features with limited day-to-day direction.
  • Use approved AI coding platforms to accelerate development while reviewing, understanding, testing, and documenting the generated code.
  • Develop and refine web-based forms, workflows, dashboards, filters, calculations, notifications, approvals, and reports for internal business processes.
  • Build supervised connections to approved internal databases and services using documented SQL queries, views, APIs, or scheduled data processes.
  • Map and reconcile shared identifiers and fields across source systems so data can be combined accurately and traced to its source.
  • Validate source data, transformation logic, calculations, permissions, and application behavior with business and technical reviewers.
  • Write unit, integration, and user-acceptance test cases; correct defects; and maintain a clear development backlog.
  • Maintain source control, setup instructions, data dictionaries, interface documentation, release notes, and basic user guidance.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing an associate, bachelor's, or graduate degree in computer science, software engineering, electrical or computer engineering, data science, information systems, or a related field.
  • Foundational programming experience in at least one language such as Python, JavaScript or TypeScript, C#, or Java.
  • Basic understanding of relational databases, SQL, APIs, data structures, and software testing.
  • Ability to work independently within a limited weekly schedule, ask questions early, and communicate progress and blockers clearly.
  • Ability to document technical work and explain design decisions to both technical and business users.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building a complete application or meaningful feature using a modern web framework, database, API, automation tool, or data-visualization library.
  • Experience using Git, GitHub, and AI coding assistants in a structured development process.
  • Coursework or interest in aviation, finance, operations research, asset management, logistics, analytics, or workflow design.

Data Security and Development Expectations

  • Use only company-approved systems, development environments, data sources, and AI tools. Do not enter sensitive company data into an AI tool unless the tool and use are explicitly approved.
  • Treat AI-generated code as a draft. Review, test, document, and explain all code before it is merged or deployed, and promptly raise uncertain or unsafe output for review.
  • Follow least-privilege access, secure coding, change control, version control, and documentation requirements. Protect internal data and use production access only under authorized supervision.

Working Conditions

  • A minimum of 10 hours per week in office only in Bridgewater, VA
  • Availability for at least 90 days or completion of project

Pay
