About the Role

      

Our top-rated summer internship program is designed to give college students meaningful work experience in specific functions, providing a deeper understanding of the processes of a Fortune 500 financial services organization. The program offers interesting challenges, valuable experience, and an opportunity to get to know Thrivent. This 12-week internship is a key piece of Thrivent’s entry-level talent program to ensure a strong talent pipeline to meet the needs of the organization now and into the future. The internship program offers assignments to optimize your skills and experience while giving you exposure to multiple business areas.

The Investment Operations Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting Thrivent’s investment operations team and learning about the investment trade lifecycle. Working alongside experienced professionals, the intern will assist with operational processes such as trade support, cash management, corporate actions, reporting, and data analysis.

This internship offers exposure to investment products, financial markets, and operational systems while developing analytical, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, eager to learn, and interested in exploring a career in investment operations, asset management, or financial services.

The Investment Operations team plays a critical role in supporting investment strategies by providing operational analytics, trade support, and accurate data across the investment lifecycle.

         

          

Position Responsibilities

Investment Operations & Trade Support 

  • Provide operational support for equity, fixed income, derivatives, private equity, and investment strategy transactions, ensuring accurate trade verification, affirmation, and settlement. 

  • Reconcile trades, positions, and cash balances across multiple asset classes; monitor and escalate discrepancies or breaks as needed. 

  • Maintain accurate investment data in internal systems and portfolio accounting platforms; support updates driven by operational processes. 

  • Process corporate actions, income collections, variation margins, collateral, and settlements; ensure proper handling and reconciliation. 

Relationship Management and Communication 

  • Communicate time-sensitive information to portfolio managers, traders, brokers, custodians, fund accountants, and internal stakeholders. 

  • Liaise with external partners including brokers, custodians, and vendors to maintain strong working relationships and resolve issues. 

Process Improvement  

  • Participate in onboarding new accounts and custodial setups; contribute to process documentation and continuous improvement initiatives. 

  • Support system enhancements, automation efforts, and cross-functional projects to streamline operations and improve efficiency. 

Reporting & Compliance Support 

  • Generate and distribute investment-related reports and operational dashboards. 

  • Assist in preparing documentation for audits and internal reviews. 

  • Ensure adherence to internal controls, compliance policies, and investment guidelines.

Experience Gained from Internship

  • Knowledge of settlement practices and procedures for all domestic and foreign securities: equities, fixed income and derivatives (swaps, options, and futures)

  • Knowledge of capital markets and industry practices

  • Ability to actively interface with a variety of internal business partners (e.g. portfolio management, trading staff and accounting)

  • Work experience in a time sensitive environment

  • Independent judgment

  • Bloomberg Terminal exposure

  • Strong attention to detail

  • General knowledge of accounting

  • Provide time sensitive communication to portfolio managers, team members, traders, brokers, custodians, and fund accountants

Position Requirements

  • Current Junior (Dec. 2027 or May 2028 graduation date) working towards an undergraduate degree in Finance or Economics

  • Excellent academic track record (GPA 3.0+)

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

  • Ability to work full time during the summer

  • Ability to work in the United States for indefinite period without sponsorship

The applicable hourly wage range for this full-time role is $27.00-$30.00 per hour, which factors in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will be determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to, location, relevant experience, skills, and knowledge, business needs, market demand, and other factors Thrivent deems important. ​
