Job Description

Position Summary

As our Editorial Intern, you’ll support Hay House’s growing fiction list while gaining hands-on exposure to the editorial and acquisitions process. Working alongside our editorial team, you’ll learn how editors evaluate submissions, identify promising stories, and consider manuscripts for the Hay House fiction list.

Our fiction list includes romantasy and romantic fantasy, contemporary and historical romance, cozy mysteries, fairytales, folklore and mythological retellings, healing fiction, and philosophical speculative novels.

This is a part-time, remote internship, working approximately two days per week at a rate of $20.00 per hour. The position is open to candidates residing in eligible U.S. states.

 

Responsibilities and Expertise

  • Read and evaluate fiction submissions under the guidance of a senior editor.
  • Prepare concise reader reports summarizing a manuscript’s premise, strengths, areas for development, and potential fit with the Hay House fiction list.
  • Research comparable titles, authors, and relevant fiction trends.
  • Help maintain submission records and editorial files.
  • Assist with preparing materials for editorial meetings.
  • Participate in discussions about fiction submissions and the publishing process.
  • Support the editorial team with administrative and project-based tasks as needed.

 

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Strong interest in commercial genre fiction, including romantasy, romantic fantasy, romance, cozy mysteries, fairytale and myth retellings, and healing or speculative fiction.
  • Excellent reading comprehension and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop thoughtful opinions about manuscripts and communicate feedback clearly and respectfully.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage deadlines and follow through on assignments
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Curiosity and an eagerness to learn about the publishing industry.

 

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a degree in English Literature, Creative Writing, Publishing, or a related field.
  • Previous publishing experience is helpful but not required. We’re looking for someone who is excited to learn.
