About the Role

Start Building Your Career Before You Graduate

Ever wonder what goes into designing the roads, intersections, bridges, and the transportation systems people rely on every day? As a Transportation Engineering Intern at HR Green, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers and designers on projects that help people move safely and efficiently through their communities. Depending on your team, location, and projects, you may gain exposure to roadways, highways, intersections, sidewalks, trails, bridges, and the design elements behind transportation infrastructure.

This isn’t an internship where you’ll spend the summer watching from the sidelines. You’ll be part of the team, learning by doing.

Why HR Green?

For more than 113 years, HR Green has partnered with communities to design and build the infrastructure most people take for granted. From the roads you travel and the water you use to the communities where people live and work, our mission is simple: Building Communities. Improving Lives.

Our people are at the heart of that mission. We’re proud to be recognized as a Great Place to Work and consistently ranked among Engineering News Record’s Top 500 Design Firms in the United States.

As an intern, you’ll contribute to real projects, learn from experienced engineers, and have people invested in helping you grow. You’ll also have opportunities to explore different areas of civil engineering, build relationships across HR Green, and start discovering where you want your career to take you.

What You’ll Experience in Transportation

Transportation engineering is about planning, designing, and improving the infrastructure that connects people and communities.

During your internship, you may:

  • Support the planning and design of roadways, highways, intersections, bridges, and other transportation projects
  • Assist with engineering calculations, data collection and analysis, drawings, plans, reports, and project documentation
  • Gain exposure to design tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Civil 3D, or OpenRoads
  • Participate in field visits to better understand existing conditions and see how engineering designs connect to the real world
  • Visit ongoing construction sites to make the connection between linework on a set of plans and the equipment and skills necessary to translate that into physical improvements
  • Work alongside engineers and designers while learning how transportation projects move from planning and design toward construction
  • Gain exposure to different areas of transportation engineering based on your team, location, and available projects

You don’t need to arrive knowing how to do all of this. That’s what the internship is for.

More Than a Summer Job

Your project work is only one part of the experience. Our internship program is designed to help you learn, explore, and start figuring out where you want to go in your engineering career.

Throughout the summer, you’ll have opportunities to:

  • Participate in a structured intern learning experience
  • Learn from experienced engineers and professionals who can help you grow
  • Join roundtables and conversations about engineering, consulting, professional development, and career paths
  • Learn about other areas of civil engineering across HR Green and, when opportunities are available, gain exposure to other teams
  • Build your skills through training and LinkedIn Learning
  • Connect with other interns, engineers, and leaders across the firm

You don’t have to have your entire career figured out before you start. You may leave the summer knowing Transportation is exactly where you want to be, or with a better understanding of another area of civil engineering that interests you. We want to give you the experience and exposure to help you find where you fit.

Qualifications

  • Be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • Be available to work full time in office during Summer 2027, typically from mid-May or early June through early August
  • Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, Civil 3D, OpenRoads, transportation design, traffic analysis, structures, surveying, or other civil engineering tools is a plus, but previous Transportation or engineering internship experience is not required.

Compensation

$18-28/hr

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in accordance with the Illinois Salary Transparency amendment to the Equal Pay Act of 2003.
