About the Role

A. Morton Thomas and Associates, Inc. (AMT) is seeking a highly motivated Civil Engineering undergraduate student to join us as a Transportation Engineer Intern in our Richmond, Virginia office for the 2027 summer internship period. Candidates should have an interest in Roadway Design, Traffic Engineering or Hydraulic Design. This is a paid, full-time summer internship position with an anticipated duration from Mid-June through mid-August 2027 (flexible dates) and has the potential to transition into a full-time position upon graduation.

Responsibilities
  • The selected candidate will work under the supervision of Project Managers and Design Team Leaders and may be expected to perform the following tasks:
  • Prepare roadway, trail and sidewalk design plans using Bentley OpenRoads Designer (ORD) and Microstation design platforms;
  • Prepare meeting exhibits and construction plans;
  • Prepare Basis of Design reports and specifications;
  • Identify potential utility conflicts and avoidance measures;
  • Calculate quantities and prepare cost estimates;
  • Conduct site visits and field inspections;
  • Perform other design and related tasks, as directed   


Minimum Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years old;
  • Rising 3rd year or 4th year student pursuing BSCE;
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Possess solid technical and problem-solving skills;
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment;
  • Hard-working and willingness to take direction
