Job Overview

The Merchandise Planning Intern participates in Macy's 8-week summer internship program, gaining hands-on experience in a critical retail business function. Interns partner with Merchandise Planning teams to support forecasting, financial planning, inventory optimization, and assortment strategies that drive sales and profitability.

Through meaningful project work, daily business exposure, and collaboration with cross-functional partners, interns develop an understanding of how data-driven decisions influence business performance. Interns contribute directly to business outcomes while building relationships with leaders across the organization.

The program also provides opportunities to engage with Macy's culture through networking events, professional development workshops, executive speaker sessions, and mentorship opportunities. The internship program may lead to an opportunity to work full-time with Macy’s in our early careers program after graduation. This internship is based in Macy's New York City corporate offices.

What You Will Do

  • Gain professional development through hands-on learning, structured workshops, and collaborative projects.
  • Build relationships with fellow interns, business leaders, and cross-functional partners.
  • Analyze historical sales data, current trends, and market insights to support forecasting and business recommendations.
  • Assist in developing seasonal merchandise plans and assortment strategies in collaboration with cross-functional teams, including buying, marketing, and inventory management.
  • Monitor inventory levels, sales performance, and sell-through trends to identify risks and opportunities.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of merchandise financial plans, including sales, inventory, and margin targets.
  • Generate and analyze reports on key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure business performance and track progress against goals.
  • Conduct competitive analysis and market research to identify customer trends and growth opportunities.
  • Utilize analytical tools and retail metrics to support decision-making and drive business results.
  • Participate in special projects and present recommendations to partners and leadership teams.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
  • Support additional business initiatives and projects as assigned.

Skills You Will Need

Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills
Strong analytical thinker with the ability to identify trends, interpret data, evaluate business performance, and develop actionable recommendations.

Business Acumen
Demonstrates an interest in retail, merchandising, and inventory management, with an understanding of how sales, inventory, and profitability influence business decisions.

Forecasting & Inventory Planning
Ability to learn and apply forecasting concepts, inventory optimization techniques, and assortment planning strategies to support business objectives.

Communication & Presentation Skills
Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills with the ability to clearly communicate ideas and insights to a variety of audiences.

Collaboration & Relationship Building
Ability to effectively collaborate across teams, build relationships, and contribute in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment.

Organizational Skills
Detail-oriented with strong time management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.



Technical Proficiency
Proficient in Microsoft Office and a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including formulas, lookups, pivot tables, and basic data analysis; ability to use data and reporting tools to identify trends and support business decision-making.

Adaptability & Initiative
Demonstrates curiosity, a willingness to learn, and the ability to adapt to changing business priorities.

Who You Are

  • Rising Seniors pursuing a bachelor's degree in Business, Merchandising, Retail Management, Finance, Economics, Supply Chain, Data Analytics, or a related field are encouraged to apply.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA preferred.
  • Strong academic performance and demonstrated leadership through work, campus involvement, or extracurricular activities.
  • Passion for retail and a desire to build a career in merchandising, planning, or related business functions.
  • This role involves performing essential job functions such as communication, collaboration, and use of office and computer systems. Responsibilities include accessing and reviewing written and electronic information and interacting with workplace materials as needed to carry out job responsibilities.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
