Co-op Student, Bus Service Design

4-Month Co-op Term | January 2027 to April 2027

Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario.

The Bus Service Design team is seeking three (3) Co-op Students to support the planning, implementation, and monitoring of GO Transit bus services across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

These opportunities are available across two areas within Bus Operations Planning:

• Two (2) positions in Operational Excellence, supporting field data collection, service monitoring, operational analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives. These positions report to the Senior Planning Officer, Bus Operations Planning.
• One (1) position in Scheduling, supporting the development and analysis of bus schedules and service plans. This position reports to the Superintendent, Bus Scheduling.
   

Depending on your assigned team, you will gain hands-on experience in transit planning, service analysis, operational improvement, and data-driven decision-making while contributing to the delivery of GO Bus services.

What will I be doing?
Depending on your assigned team, you will support a variety of transit planning, operational improvement, and service delivery initiatives.

Operational Excellence (2 Positions)

• Conduct site visits to bus stops, terminals, and transit facilities across the GO Transit service area.
• Collect, validate, and maintain bus stop and operational data within planning systems, including Hastus.
• Perform field observations and reviews to assess service delivery, infrastructure, and operational performance.
• Analyze operational data to identify trends, issues, and opportunities for service improvements.
• Support operational improvement and continuous improvement initiatives through research, data collection, and analysis.

Scheduling (1 Position)

• Support the development, review, and maintenance of GO Bus schedules and related service plans.
• Analyze service, ridership, and operational data to support scheduling decisions and service adjustments.
• Assist with schedule planning activities and the preparation of reports, spreadsheets, and planning documentation.
• Support operational reviews and planning initiatives that help improve service reliability and customer experience.
• Conduct occasional field observations to support scheduling and operational requirements.
   

All Positions

• Develop and maintain spreadsheets, databases, dashboards, and reports used to support planning and operational decisions.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to gather information and support project deliverables.
• Assist in preparing reports, presentations, and documentation related to transit planning, scheduling, service design, and operational initiatives.

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?

Required

• Currently enrolled full-time in a recognized post-secondary co-op program and eligible to complete a co-op work term as part of your academic requirements, with plans to return to school following the work term.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Interest in public transit, transportation planning, operations, or mobility systems.
   

Assets

• Enrolled in Urban Planning, Geography, Environmental Studies, Transportation Planning, GIS, Business, Data Analytics, Engineering, Public Policy, or a related discipline.
• Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS.
• Experience using data analysis or visualization tools such as Power BI, R Studio, or Python.
• Experience working with spreadsheets, databases, or large datasets.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Previous academic, volunteer, work, or co-op experience involving research, analysis, planning, or operational projects.
   

Additional Information

• Operational Excellence Positions: Require a valid Ontario Class G Driver's Licence in good standing and involve regular field work throughout the GTHA to support operational reviews, data collection, and service improvement initiatives.
• Scheduling Position: Supports the development and analysis of GO Bus schedules and service plans. Students from a variety of academic backgrounds with an interest in public transit and operations are encouraged to apply. Occasional field work may be required based on operational needs.
