Mechanical Engineering Intern – Summer 2027

 Summary:
The Summer Engineering Intern is a temporary, entry-level position designed for a current college student interested in gaining hands-on experience in the engineering and design industry. The intern will work alongside EMA team members to learn the company’s design processes, drafting standards, project workflow, and engineering practices while contributing to active projects.During the summer internship, the intern will gain exposure to AutoCAD and/or Revit, project setup, drawing development, field work, and project deliverables. The goal of the internship is to provide meaningful, practical experience that complements the intern’s academic coursework and introduces them to a professional engineering environment.

Responsibilities:

Job responsibilities include:

• Assist with engineering design and drafting activities under the direction of experienced team members.
• Develop knowledge and competency in AutoCAD, Revit, and Microsoft Office.
• Learn EMA's design process, including drafting standards, check set requirements, project organization, and drawing development.
• Assist with project setup and become familiar with:
  • Setting up sheets.
  • Sheet naming and organization.
  • Information included on various drawing sheets.
  • Specialty sheets, such as roof plans, kitchen plans, ballfield lighting, theatrical lighting, and other project-specific drawings.
• Gain exposure to applicable design codes, standards, and requirements, including owner, architectural, municipal, and industry requirements.
• Assist with refining sketches, notes, layouts, and other project information into design documents.
• Communicate questions and project needs with team members, Team Leaders, and Client Managers.
• Learn how project schedules, deliverables, and deadlines are tracked and managed.
• Become familiar with EMA's network, file structure, and project documentation procedures.
• Record and organize project information electronically or in written form as needed.
• Take and organize photographs for site and project documentation.
• Participate in field work as needed to support project design. Field work may include extensive walking, traveling to job sites, climbing ladders, accessing crawlspaces or attic spaces, crossing parapet walls, and walking on roofs.
• Participate in training, team meetings, and other professional development opportunities offered throughout the summer internship.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience:

1 to 3 years of relevant work experience. School experience may be substituted for work experience.

Education/Requirements:

• Currently enrolled in a four-year engineering or related degree program.
• Incoming junior or senior classification preferred.
• Associate of Applied Science in Engineering Design Technology, Certificate of Proficiency in Computer-Aided Drafting, or equivalent coursework may also be considered depending on the internship discipline.
• AutoCAD experience preferred but not required.
• Revit experience preferred but not required.
• Ability and willingness to learn new software, processes, and engineering concepts.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively within a team environment.
