At ATI, we engineer specialty materials that power the next generation of aircraft, spacecraft, surgical implants, and energy systems. As a VIM Process Engineering Intern, you’ll work directly with Operations and Engineering teams in ATI’s Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) area to improve process consistency, quality, and furnace performance. You’ll apply your engineering and materials science knowledge to hands-on projects involving nickel melting technologies, process optimization, and furnace operations.
What You’ll Work On
Depending on your project assignment, you may:
- Partner with the Operations team to create visual standards for quality metrics on the VIM shop floor.
- Update the VIM Can-Up MIS to optimize the sequence of elemental additions using thermodynamic and chemical modeling.
- Conduct refractory trials for new suppliers and document VIM furnace liner health to support furnace performance and reliability.
- Analyze process information to identify opportunities to improve melt quality and consistency.
- Support the development and documentation of standard operating procedures for VIM processes.
- Partner with Operations and Engineering teams to investigate process conditions and develop practical solutions.
What You’ll Gain

- Experience conducting investigative failure analysis and process improvement in a manufacturing environment.
- Potential opportunity to transition into a full-time Process Engineer position at ATI after graduation.
Preferred Qualifications
- B.S. or Graduate candidate in:
- Materials Science & Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Metallurgical Engineering
- Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering
- GPA of 3.0+ (preferred)
- Strong interest in thermo-mechanical processing of metals
- Familiarity with:
- Excel, Python, or Minitab/JMP for data analysis
- Stress-strain behavior, microstructure-property relationships, and process modeling
- Ability to work in plant and shop-floor environments
