Structural Engineering Intern

DUBUQUE, IOWA

The Structural Engineering Intern position is designed to provide hands-on technical and engineering experience through meaningful project work that supports the intern’s professional growth and career development. The internship offers exposure to variety of structural/architectural projects, including commercial, education, industrial, residential, environmental and bridge structures, as well as performing structural assessments. You will be exposed to a wide variety of design techniques and construction materials including reinforced concrete, steel, wood and aluminum.  

Interns will work alongside experienced professionals to gain practical knowledge in project administration, engineering documentation, and design support. Future internships and opportunities upon graduation may also be available.

Position Responsibilities.

• Work under the direction of a Licensed Professional Engineer.
• Research design criteria including building codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Provide documentation of existing conditions.
• Perform engineering assignments requiring application of engineering formulas, standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
• Prepare structural calculations incorporating hand calculations to support software results.
• Prepare document review comments and detail sketches to convey the design intent.
• Develop design aids as productivity tools for staff use (e.g., spreadsheets, etc.).
• Assist support staff in producing construction documents using Revit.
• Review construction submittals for conformance with contract documents.
