FAIRVOTE SUMMARY: 

FairVote is one of the nation’s leading nonprofits working on electoral reforms to advance democracy. It has a national reputation for thought leadership, rigorous research and analysis, developing policy ideas and strategies, influencing a broad array of policy debates at the federal and state levels, and shaping policy outcomes. 

FairVote is the national driving force behind advancing ranked choice voting (RCV) and proportional RCV in legislative districts to give voters more choices, better representation, and better governance. RCV has become the fastest-growing improvement to our elections; with FairVote’s guidance and a growing coalition of national and state allies, nearly 14 million voters are able to rank candidates in their elections.

COMMUNICATIONS INTERN POSITION SUMMARY: 

Interns get a unique opportunity to contribute to FairVote’s Communications Department. Tasks may include drafting blogs, social media posts, opinion pieces, or press releases; researching election results and topics; and compiling FairVote’s daily media monitoring email and other media monitoring tasks. Interns should be current undergraduate or graduate students, or recent graduates with a commitment to voting rights and electoral reform and an interest in media and communications. Coursework in political science, communications, and other relevant fields is preferred.

Responsibilities:

• Writing for the FairVote website and other platforms

• Creating content for social media accounts

• Researching topics related to elections and reform

• Managing FairVote’s media monitoring for electoral reform news 

• Helping compile media lists and identify media outlets for particular stories or press releases 

• Following online political conversations and advising FairVote staff on opportunities to engage

• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: 

• Strong research, writing, and communications skills 

• Effective problem-solving skills 

• Ability to multitask and juggle competing deadlines

• Interest in democracy reform

• Understanding of, and passion for, FairVote’s policy areas

• Desire to learn more about building advocacy coalitions

Eligibility: 

• Open to rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, or recent graduates

• Coursework/major in political science or communications/writing disciplines preferred.
