College Intern - Electrical (Instrumentation & Controls)

This internship is intended for a college student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and interested in electrical power, instrumentation, control systems, and related engineering applications. Working alongside an electrical engineer in RK&K’s Fort Lauderdale office, the intern will gain practical exposure to the planning and design of electrical and Instrumentation & Control systems for water, wastewater, and other public infrastructure facilities.

The College Intern will assist with engineering activities that may include field investigations, existing-condition documentation, equipment inventories, electrical calculations, preparation of drawings and specifications, review of equipment information, and development of technical documentation. The intern may also be introduced to electrical distribution systems, motor control, standby power, instrumentation, programmable logic controllers, supervisory control and data acquisition systems, communications systems, and control-system documentation.

Assignments will be completed under the direction of experienced engineering staff and may involve both office and field activities. The position will provide an opportunity to apply engineering coursework to active projects, build practical technical skills, and learn how multidisciplinary engineering teams deliver infrastructure improvements for public-sector clients.

Potential Internship Responsibilities

• Assist with field investigations and documentation of existing electrical and control-system equipment
• Compile equipment inventories, nameplate information, photographs, and field notes
• Assist engineers with basic electrical calculations, equipment evaluations, and technical research
• Support the preparation and revision of electrical plans, one-line diagrams, control diagrams, panel layouts, and related design documents
• Assist with instrumentation schedules, input/output lists, control-system documentation, and equipment data sheets
• Review manufacturer literature, equipment submittals, and record drawings under the direction of engineering staff
• Assist with the preparation of technical memoranda, reports, specifications, cost-estimate information, and other project documentation
• Coordinate with electrical, I&C, mechanical, civil, structural, and architectural project team members
• Participate in internal project discussions, design reviews, and quality-control activities as appropriate
• Follow RK&K safety requirements and established procedures when performing office and field assignments

Required Skills and Experience

• Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university within a College or School of Engineering
• Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
• Completed or actively pursuing coursework in electrical circuits, digital logic, electronics, power systems, control systems, instrumentation, programming, or related subjects
• Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn
• Ability to organize technical information and follow established engineering procedures
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability and willingness to perform occasional fieldwork at water, wastewater, pumping, and other infrastructure facilities
• Valid driver’s license

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Interest in electrical power, instrumentation, control systems, automation, or SCADA
• Coursework or laboratory experience involving electrical design, control systems, instrumentation, programmable logic controllers, communications, or industrial automation
• Familiarity with engineering design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or similar applications
• Familiarity with programming, electrical calculation software, or data-analysis tools
• Participation in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, International Society of Automation, or another engineering student organization
• Previous engineering, construction, utility, manufacturing, or technical internship experience
• Interest in water, wastewater, municipal infrastructure, or other public works projects
• Ability to interpret basic electrical diagrams, schematics, or technical drawings

Membership in IEEE or ISA is beneficial but is not required.
