The Software Engineer Intern will support software development, testing, and product improvement initiatives across Guidant's measurement technology portfolio. This position will work closely with Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Product Management, Quality, and Operations teams while gaining practical experience applying software engineering concepts in a product development environment.

What You Will Be Doing:

Software Development & Design

• Receive direction and guidance from Engineering Management and/or a Responsible Design Engineer
• Support software development activities for new and existing products
• Evaluate, select, and apply standard software design practices, engineering techniques, procedures, and coding standards
• Assist with software enhancements, modifications, and maintenance activities
• Expand capabilities with engineering tools and development environments while learning new technologies as assigned

Software Testing & Validation

• Develop test plans to verify and validate software functionality against requirements and specifications
• Execute test plans, document results, and assist with evaluating outcomes
• Support product testing, witness testing, and validation activities
• Assist with identifying, documenting, and resolving software and product-related issues

Technical Problem Solving

• Troubleshoot software, communication, and product performance issues
• Analyze data and test results to identify root causes and recommend solutions
• Support engineering investigations and continuous improvement initiatives
• Follow established procedures that govern product development, design, and modification activities

Technical Documentation & Reporting

• Assist in preparing technical specifications, test documentation, reports, and engineering records
• Document software changes, test results, findings, and recommendations
• Support development of design inputs and technical requirements for projects and manufacturing operations
• Assist in communicating project status and technical information to cross-functional teams

Collaboration & Professional Development

• Work independently and collaboratively with engineering teams and assigned mentors
• Participate in project meetings, design reviews, and technical discussions
• Develop professional communication and teamwork skills in a manufacturing and technology environment

Your Areas of Knowledge and Expertise that matter most for this role:

 Education & Experience

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field 
• Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing preferred 
• Previous software development, technical project, research, co-op, or internship experience is a plus

Technical & Functional Skills

• Knowledge of Linux environments 
• Experience with or coursework involving C, C++, JavaScript, or Assembly programming 
• Exposure to Python programming is preferred 
• Familiarity with communication protocols such as TCP/IP, HTTP, Modbus, MQTT, or similar technologies is a plus 
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications 
• Basic understanding of software engineering principles, testing methodologies, and debugging techniques

Key Interactions

Internally: Collaborate with Engineering, Product Management, Quality, Manufacturing, and Operations teams.

Externally: Limited interaction with suppliers, vendors, and external partners supporting software tools, engineering projects, testing activities, and product development initiatives.

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily in an office or laboratory environment. During product testing and validation activities, the intern may enter manufacturing or flow-test areas where there may be varying temperatures, elevated noise levels, dust, and exposure to petroleum products. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required when entering designated production or testing areas.

Physical Demands:

Position requires routine computer use and extended periods of sitting while performing software development, testing, and documentation activities. The role may also require occasional walking through office, laboratory, manufacturing, and test areas; standing during testing or project activities; bending, reaching, climbing stairs, and lifting lightweight equipment or materials associated with assigned projects.
