Intern - Safety

We will provide you with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting a fast-paced, dynamic general contractor. You will receive guidance from experienced Safety professionals in a collaborative and supportive work environment. This is an ideal role for a motivated, technology student pursuing a career in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Management or related field.

The hourly pay rate for this position is $31.00. This is a temporary, non-exempt position earning required Washington sick pay and paid holidays during the duration of the internship, but no other benefits are offered. Our office is in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle. Some travel to local jobsites within the greater Seattle area may be required. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist with day-to-day safety operations on assigned projects
• Assist in implementing site-specific safety programs and activities
• Attend and assist with safety orientations, training and safety meetings
• Conduct work area safety audits under the direction of the project safety team
• Document and track safety observations, hazards and corrective actions
• Assist in reviewing work plans and subcontractor safety activities
• Assist with collecting, documenting and analyzing safety performance data
• Assist with maintaining and inspecting safety equipment and personal protective equipment
• Assist with investigations of injuries, incidents, near misses and property damage
• Assist with project emergency response planning and preparedness
• Participate in project planning and hazard analysis
• Assist with preparing safety communications, training materials and reports
• Maintain accurate and organized project safety records
• Participate in learning teams and continual improvement activities
• Maintain basic knowledge of applicable safety regulations and industry practices
• Build positive working relationships with project staff, craft and subcontractors
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Currently pursuing a degree or certificate in occupational safety and health, construction management, engineering, environmental health, public health or related field
• Basic knowledge of occupational safety and health principles
• Basic analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
• Willingness to learn to conduct safety training and investigations
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Willingness to learn, ask questions and accept feedback
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software
• OSHA 10-Hour Construction certification preferred
• Construction, safety or field experience preferred, but not required

• Ability to remain productive in an office environment that is subject to frequent interruptions including moderate noise (i.e., business office with computers, phone, and printers, light traffic).
• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to travel between offices and project locations as required.
