Key Responsibilities We Will Trust You With:

The Mechanical Engineer Intern will support engineering, product development, and continuous improvement initiatives across Guidant's manufacturing and product portfolio. This position will work closely with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and Product Management teams while gaining practical experience applying engineering concepts in a manufacturing environment.

What You Will Be Doing:

Product Design & Development

  • Assist with product design, development, and improvement activities for new and existing products 
  • Support creation and maintenance of engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation 
  • Participate in product testing, validation, and evaluation activities 
  • Gain exposure to the engineering processes that support product development and manufacturing

Engineering Analysis & Technical Problem Solving

  • Assist with engineering calculations, data collection, and analysis activities 
  • Support investigation of technical issues and identification of potential solutions 
  • Participate in root cause analysis and problem-solving efforts 
  • Learn how engineering principles are applied to real-world manufacturing and product challenges

Manufacturing & Operational Support

  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to observe and support production processes 
  • Assist with engineering projects focused on improving quality, efficiency, and product performance 
  • Participate in manufacturing observations and process improvement initiatives 
  • Support implementation of engineering changes and continuous improvement activities

Continuous Improvement

  • Support Lean Manufacturing and Operational Excellence initiatives 
  • Participate in Kaizen events and continuous improvement activities 
  • Assist with identifying opportunities to improve processes, reduce waste, and enhance productivity 
  • Contribute to projects that support manufacturing and operational excellence goals

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Collect, organize, and analyze engineering and manufacturing data
  • Assist with KPI tracking, reporting, and data visualization activities
  • Support development of presentations, reports, and project documentation
  • Present project findings and recommendations to engineering and cross-functional teams

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Product Management, Planning, Procurement, and Operations teams 
  • Participate in project meetings and cross-functional discussions 
  • Develop professional communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills

Your Areas of Knowledge and Expertise that matter most for this role:

 Education & Experience

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related engineering field 
  • Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing preferred 
  • Previous manufacturing, technical, design, or internship experience is a plus

Technical & Functional Skills

  • Interest in product design, manufacturing processes, and engineering problem solving 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications 
  • Exposure to CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar design tools is a plus 
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings and manufacturing processes is preferred

Key Interactions 

Internally: Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Product Management, Planning, Procurement, and Operations teams.

 Externally: Limited interaction with suppliers, vendors, and external partners supporting engineering projects, product development activities, and manufacturing operations.

Work Environment:

The intern will spend time supporting engineering projects, product development activities, manufacturing observations, and cross-functional improvement initiatives

May be exposed to machinery, noise, moving equipment, and varying temperatures within production areas. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required when entering designated manufacturing areas.

Physical Demands:

Position requires routine computer use, frequent walking throughout manufacturing facilities, and standing during project observations, testing activities, and team meetings. Occasional bending, reaching, climbing stairs, and lifting materials or components associated with assigned projects may be required.
