About The Company
The Utah Jazz is a professional basketball team based in Salt Lake City, Utah. They are currently part of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference in the NBA (National Basketball Association). Originally located in New Orleans, Louisiana, the franchise began in 1974 as the New Orleans Jazz and the18th professional basketball team to enter the NBA. Despite drawing well, the franchise struggled and was eventually moved to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1979 after just five years in the league. In 1985, Larry H. Miller became co-owner of the still struggling organization, and then a year later, purchased the remaining portion from Sam Battistone to become the sole owner. The Jazz has since become one of the more successful teams in the league with frequent post-season playoff appearances, including consecutive appearances from 1984 to 2004, as well as two NBA Finals appearance in 1997 and 1998.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Utah Jazz are seeking a basketball analytics intern for Summer 2027. Applicants must be current students who are adept in a relevant technical area (computer programming, statistics, data science, etc.), and passionate about basketball. The intern will spend 10-12 weeks working on basketball analytics projects that match their skillset.


The intern will spend part of the summer onsite in Salt Lake City.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct in-depth basketball analytics projects that help our team better predict basketball outcomes and facilitate better decision-making across Basketball Operations.
  • Duties may include cleaning, validating, and analyzing basketball datasets; developing and evaluating statistical or machine-learning models to support Basketball Operations decisions; translating findings into practical recommendations for nontechnical stakeholders; and documenting code, methods, assumptions, and model results to support reproducible analysis.
  • Receive mentorship from our experienced group of data scientists and engineers.
  • Present your work to key stakeholders.
  • Exemplify the Utah Jazz mission and values: transparent, all in, community obsessed, one team, and scrappy.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in (or equivalently proficient in) statistics, data science, math, computer science, or a related field.
  • Coursework or experience in statistical modeling; machine learning; understanding of model validation, uncertainty, and common analytical pitfalls; and communicating analytical results to nontechnical audiences.
  • 1+ years of experience analyzing data using Python or R.
  • Familiarity with basketball data and the latest basketball analytics techniques.
  • A desire to work in a startup-like environment where you will be empowered to make design decisions.
  • A track record of writing clean and well-documented code.
  • Enthusiasm for basketball.
  • Nice to have experience with SQL and Git.
