About the Role

Main Line Health’s Nurse Extern Program

Position Summary: As a Nurse Extern at Main Line Health, you will gain hands-on experience in a dynamic clinical environment, supporting our nursing staff and providing exceptional care to patients. This position is designed for nursing students who are looking to enhance their clinical skills and gain valuable experience in preparation for a full-time nursing career. As a Nurse Extern, you will provide direct care to patient in a nursing support position.

Candidates may also apply to be considered for our System Travel Agility Team (Float Pool). STAT Nurse Externs have the ability to pick up shifts at any one of our 4 acute care hospitals.

While completing your application, you will be asked to list your preferred hospital placement location(s). If your application is chosen for consideration, a Talent Acquisition team member will connect with you about available units.

 

Schedule: The Nurse Extern Program is a year-round position (not a summer only role). The hours requirement for Nurse Externs is a minimum of 24 hours per week during the summer after training is completed (June/July/August) and a minimum of 16 hours per month during the fall and spring semesters (September to May).

 

Shifts available: Nurse Externs must have the ability to work day, evenings, and night shift, as well as weekend (Saturday and Sunday) shifts. Most shifts are 12 hours.

 

Hourly Rate: $18.00 per hour.  Nurse Externs who work evening and night shifts are eligible to receive a shift differential. Nurse Externs are merit eligible.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform basic nursing support duties such as taking vital signs, AM/PM care, EKGs, blood glucose monitoring, finger sticks, phlebotomy and more.
  • Document patient information accurately and timely in electronic health records (EPIC).
  • Support patient mobility, comfort, and safety.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Participate in patient care planning and review sessions.
  • Adhere to all hospital protocols and infection control practices.

 

Qualifications:

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited nursing program (Diploma, ASN, or BSN).
  • Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is preferred
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility and availability to work year-round.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing compassionate patient care.

  • Please include with your application submission your updated resume with your anticipated graduation date (MM/YYYY) from your nursing program. Include any clinical rotations you have completed along with the hours and locations.

Interview format:

  • On-Demand Video Interview (Required): Qualified applicants will receive an invitation to complete an On-Demand Video Interview, which includes questions about their interest in and qualifications for the Nurse Extern Program.

  • Virtual Information Session: Once On-Demand Video Interview submissions have been reviewed, candidates selected to move forward in the process will be invited to attend a mandatory virtual information session.

  • In-Person Interview: Following the information session, candidates will participate in an in-person interview with nurse managers from their campus of interest. This provides an opportunity to learn more about the team, unit, and Nurse Extern experience while allowing managers to get to know the candidate.

Start dates: Qualified candidates who are offered Nurse Extern positions must be able to start in new employee orientation and complete the Monday-Friday day shift training during one of the following weeks:

  • 4/26/2027 (Monday-Friday)

  • 5/10/2027 (Monday-Friday)

  • 5/24/2027 (Monday-Friday)
