Summary
Summer Internship Program – Academy Bank’s Summer Internship offers students pursuing business-related degrees hands-on experience in banking. Interns complete meaningful projects, participate in professional development training, and present a business research project to senior leadership. The program provides valuable career experience and potential opportunities for future full-time employment at the Bank’s Kansas City headquarters.
General
- Term of Internship: 8 weeks starting the first week of June and ending the last week of July.
- Full-time, 32-hour work week.
- Monday through Thursday schedule (9:00-5:00 or 8:30-4:30), excluding the Juneteenth and Independence Day paid holidays.
- Hourly rate of $18.00 per hour.
- All interns will perform real work in the assigned department, research and present on a real-work issue facing the banking industry and participate in a professionalism series that focuses on skills necessary to succeed in a professional environment, such as communication, etiquette, personal branding, and interviewing skills.
Department Assignments
Interns will be assigned to one of the Banks headquarter departments based on the needs and intern candidates’ skillset. We anticipate assigning summer interns to the following work:
Credit – The Credit department supports Commercial Banking by evaluating the creditworthiness of current and prospective business clients while ensuring compliance with the Bank's credit policies. Team members analyze financial statements, credit reports, tax returns, and other business records, partnering closely with commercial bankers to meet client needs. Interns gain exposure to commercial banking through activities such as spreading financial statements, researching industry data, and conducting background and news searches on potential borrowers and guarantors. By the end of the internship, they will have a foundational understanding of commercial banking and its career opportunities.
Support & Risk Departments – Interns may work in areas such as Data Analytics, Finance, IT, Compliance, Operations, Marketing, or Financial Intelligence, depending on business needs and experience. These teams support the safe and effective operation of the Bank through data, technology, processes, and risk management. Strong candidates have analytical skills, are proficient in tools such as Excel, PowerPoint, and Power BI, and work well collaboratively. Daily responsibilities may include data analysis, database research, reporting, and compliance-related activities. By the end of the internship, participants will gain a foundational understanding of banking operations, risk management, and data-driven decision-making.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ties to the Kansas City community post-graduation strongly preferred.
- College students entering their junior or senior year strongly preferred, 45 completed college credit hours minimum
- Studying Business, Accounting, Finance, Data Science or related discipline, preferred
- Strong communication skills, including verbal and written
- Demonstrates professionalism, strong communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with team members at all levels of the organization.
- College level math skills.
- Independent thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint with BI preferred, Outlook, and Copilot).
Physical Requirements
The work environment is typical of a standard office or retail banking setting. Reaching may be required involving the ability to move arms in any direction. Office equipment, such as a computer and telephone, will be used requiring the ability to manipulate a keyboard, mouse, and/or keypad. The ability to decipher a computer screen or written documents is necessary. The ability to express or exchange ideas; impart information to clients, coworkers, or the public; or to convey detailed or important instructions; is required. The ability to receive and understand detailed information shared through oral or written communication is required. Position will involve moving about the workspace to reach entrances/exits, restrooms, conference rooms, or other areas within the work environment. The position is sedentary, involving sitting most of the workday. The position requires occasional lifting and/or exerting of up to 10 pounds of force.
