About the Role

Description:

As an intern in the LEGAD Office at HQ JFC Brunssum (NATO) you will be required to provide legal support to the LEGAD and gain in-depth experience with the Office’s daily work.

About the internship:

During this 6-month programme starting 30 August 2027 until 25 February 2028, you will join the Office of the Legal Advisor. As an intern, you will be required to actively contribute to the daily work of the LEGAD Office and support the Legal Advisors with background research and participation in working groups. 

Additionally, the intern will be expected to contribute to an agreed project on emerging legal challenges resulting from novel technological and warfare developments (e.g., cognitive, space, cyber, and drone warfare), developing focused research papers and briefs.

The intern must:

1)             Be enrolled and undertaking the final year of Bachelor’s or on Master’s of Law with a focus on international law throughout the full duration of the internship;

2)             Demonstrate specific interest in novel challenges under the international law of military operations, law of armed conflict, or the law of international organisations. This should be evidenced concretely — through specific coursework, a thesis topic, a previous research paper, a publication, extracurricular activities, or prior experience. A general statement of interest is not sufficient;

3)             Demonstrate knowledge of international organisations, including NATO's structure, mandate, and role in international security.

 

In addition, we are looking for candidates having the following desirable skills:

 

1)             Be able to effectively plan and organize the working time;

2)             Be dynamic, self-motivated and personable with an ability to work in a team environment with people from diverse backgrounds;

3)             Can work under time pressure and elevated workload.

Stipend:

1)             You will be compensated at a fixed taxable rate of € 1477.30 (2026 rates), per month based on 37.5 hours internship work hours per week.

2)             We will also compensate you for travel costs to/from your university to HQ JFC Brunssum (within set cap rates).

3)             Interns will be entitled to 2 days of leave for each full month (of 37.5 hrs a week) of internship.
